Warm water and dish detergent will do the trick.
Rubbing Alcohol would do it as well. But I would wash it.
And I'm glad a ring like that got into good hands.

I used diamond on sapphire -
but consider : Alumina Zirconia (very hard, sharp grain) Blue grit.
Topaz is tough stuff indeed.

Good luck - and perhaps these suppliers can supply grit or you can...
