What to write on a quilt label
Names, places, dates are givens. But how do you identify the
contributions of those who worked on a quilt? A person designs an original quilt, pieces or appliqués it, sends it to a longarmer, and then binds and labels the quilt. "Quilted by" is an accurate description for the longarmer, but how do you title the designer/sewer? Interested to hear how others solve this problem. -- Susan aka Betsy Ross |
What to write on a quilt label
Yesterday I went to a small local quilt show that done with the
historical society in local old homes . Show was kind of disappointing compared to previous years but was still fun and one sis and I had a great day. There were many quilts that appeared to be professionally done but I never saw any mention of any machine quilter. I asked one white glove lady and she said she knew some of the quilts had indeed been sent out but she didn't know about any details of the quilts she was near. There seem to be no hard and fast rules but there should be some way to address this. I'd like to hear too Susan. Good question. Thanks! Taria Betsy Ross wrote: Names, places, dates are givens. I don't know about how it would be in a show, but I do think that anyone
who does substantial work on a quilt should be acknowledged on the label. See my only (finished) collaborative work: http://community.webshots.com/photo/...30878969HmUcrQ When the round robins are done, their labels will have all names on too. Only fair, no? What to write on a quilt label
I almost always do my own designing, drawing, piecing and quilting.
However, quite often a quilt of mine is inspired by something someone else has done - either in the quilting field or somewhere else eg a picture or a poem. So, I do give credit to whomever or whatever inspired my design. Any element in a quilt that isn't all mine, I mention specifically. .. In message , Betsy Ross writes Names, places, dates are givens. I will usually put on the label something like "from a pattern by _____"
or "inspired by ________" If it is my own design I say so. (Designed and made by ___________" Or "An original ________ design.") Something like that. I also have started putting on what batting I use, and if I use a particular fabric line I include that info too. (I fantasize about some day doing a trunk show, and people want to know that information.) Just think about what you would want to know about a quilt when you see it. Put that information on the quilt label. I also, if there is a light color backing, or space in the backing, just write the information on the quilt with a pigma pen. Makes sure it stays with the quilt and cannot be removed. I do this even if I put a separate label on. Pati, in Phx Betsy Ross wrote: Names, places, dates are givens. I usually say "made by" and my name, since I do my own quilting. On the
quilts made from blocks my mom embroidered, I say something like "embroidery by" with her name and "assembled and quilted by" with my name. If I use a pattern designed by someone else, I list the name and designer of the pattern. If I adapt someone else's pattern, I say something like "adapted from" with the name of the pattern & the designer. I also write my city & state and the year I finished the quilt. If the quilt is for a specific person, I may include their name and the occasion. If someone else did the quilting, I would say something like "top made by xxx" and "quilted by zzz". I've only sent out two quilts to be quilted; I've done the others myself. But on both of the ones I sent out, I did put who the quilter was; it's only right to acknowledge all parties to the project. When I've made quilts from swaps, that also is listed on the label. Swaps from here in town have a label that all of the swappers signed. If for no other reason, it makes a great memento for me! I've made two quilt labels and both acknowledged the maker of the top and a different quilter. I have blocks from a swap to piece together and plan to list the swap on the label. I am in a quandary on how to make a label for a quilt made using a top bought at a yard sale as I am unsure about the maker's name even though I know the name of the lady having the yard sale. She may or may not have made the top herself. Debra in VA See my quilts at http://community.webshots.com/user/debplayshere |

I'm looking at the label on one of mine as I type:
Quilt Name for Recipient's Name with love from Whatever the recipient calls me [Mumma Graham, Grandma, Auntie Kim, Kim, Mrs. Graham, etc. etc.] Machine Pieced and Machine Quilted by Kimberley Graham Nanaimo BC, Canada -- Date completed Design source: Name of book or pattern or website or [more often when it's not one of my patterns] Design adapted from: name of book pattern or website or Original Design. For the Red Lake Hug the Seeing Stars group did... for recognition on
the label I put: Individual Blocks Contributed by: Anne in CA Melissa in NJ Kathryn in MI etc., etc. so all names were listed Quilt Construction by: Melissa B____ Deptford, NJ Date Also, since Anne in CA had one of her blocks signed on the front, I signed all the blocks on the front so it was readily apparent who made what block. I am waiting on a reply from Dreamweaver verifying address befpre I mail it off. No pics uploaded yet. MElissa in NJ |
