Heat Resistant Glass Paint
 

I want to paint some light bulbs I have in my lamps. One is a halogen
bulb so gets pretty hot. Are there any heat resistant glass paints on
the market. Any help, or alternative suggestions apreciated.

Ah, he seeketh the Holy Grail. And why not? So far nothing I've found works
very well, but I'm a perfectionist (recovering). Recently, I used some
Krylon "Stained Glass" glass paint on a 150 watt halo flood and it lasted
for a few days before it began to fade from cherry red to a nice burnt
orange hue....very pleasant, if that's the color you wanted. Probably still
removable, if i cared. Probably end up a nice amber color if I keep using
it. They indicate candle lanterns OK, but do not mention light bulbs on the
package (hint). Conclusion: If you want permanent colored bulbs you must buy
them in the color you want. If temporary duty will suffice, spray
away.......

Anyway ... this has been my experience with painting light bulbs at various
times in my life...good luck. Or maybe, someone has a new solution.... I'm
eager to hear it if there is one. ( I admit I've never tried firing vitreous
enamels onto a light bulb ...... yet)

There could be a problem with the low-melting point black glass, used
to seal the cap onto the bulb itself. Best done before the lamp bulb
is turned into a lamp, I fancy.

Do you want even overall color or a design?
Do you want opaque color or transparent? (If you don't know the
difference, go to a store that sells them - opaque is used when the shape of
the bulb is the decoration, think of a pingpong ball, while transparent is
used when you want the colored light so when you look at the bulb you see
the filament, think of stained glass.
Vitrified enamel requires too high a heat for the assembled bulb as
mentioned, but there are some paints sold that are "fired" in a kitchen
oven. I have not used them and they are more likely opaque than
transparent, but the bulbs could be baked in an oven or more likely baked by
their own heat.

The best paint for bulbs that reach a high temp can be found in the
automotive department - ask for engine block paint or any of their
"high heat" paints - some automotive places have a wide assortment of
colors - especially if they specialize in custom designs for cars.

Yes, but most of these will be very opaque - I have black and white here and
they cover in one coat. I would expect almost no light to come through.
