How to sew picot edging?

I visited the Chanel exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum today and saw
many dresses (silk crepe? Chiffon?) described as having picoted edges.
A web search turns up only instructions on beaded or knitted picot- can
anyone tell me how those dresses might have been sewn? I'm especially
interested in the couture technique, if that is any different from the
mass produced version.

Thank you,
Alaina

The manual that came with our Pfaff machine suggests using a blindstitch
to make a picot edge. This would certainly work on soft crepes and
chiffons. My guess as far as couture technique is that it would be
handsewn.
