Treadle belt for old machine?

Hi,
my name is jodi and i have recently moved to berlin and just
yesterday scored myself a beautiful old singer treadle machine!

Unfortunately the old leather belt is broken and I need to find a way
to substitute it.
Stockings didn't work I am afraid as it slips.

I don't speak deutsch yet so hunting down a leather man who can make a
new one would take me a month or more to locate and communicate with
...
and frankly i am ready to sew sew sew ...

so ..
any suggestions would be welcome

thanks
jodi

My sewing-machine repair shop has a bunch of treadle belts hanging on
the pegboard behind the cash register.

Take pictures of your machine and its serial number tag, then print
them out on paper. Take the copies and the old belt down to a sewing
machine repair shop and say "Gimme der replacement, por favor."
He won't understand a word of the Anglo/Deutch/Spanish sentence, but
it should give him a laugh while he finds your belt.

In the USA, sewing machine dealers still stock treadle belts, and you
can also find them online on Ebay and probably other places as well.

You can also buy them here in the UK. There are several places on the
net that do them. I got my last one from here Helen Howes:

Anywhere you can find leather, you can get a leather treadle belt,
either already made with staple at the end, or cut to order. But
sometimes something is needed right away, and there's no time to buy a
"regular" belt. In those cases, the tubing can substitute, as can a
number of thin rope-like lengths. All that is required is the length,
the circumference, and a certain amount of adhesion - not that it should
stick to the metal, just that it should not slip like Teflon.

Vegans use treadles without leather.
