OT - Doggie Doors

Remember we were talking about training dogs or cats to go through pet
flaps? Well damned if I haven't discovered the easiest way of doing it!
Keep the flappy thing tied up for about a week making sure that doggy/cat
knows that through the hole is the ONLY way of getting in and out. Then
invite people over for dinner one glorious night and have dinner outside on
the deck. Close the flap on the pet door and put your dog inside. Within 2
minutes dog will be outside. Worked with us, now we can't stop him!

Glad it worked so well Sharon. Sure wish we
could use one of those but we have inside only cats.
This dog we have now will stare at the door to go
out but won't go without a lot of prompting. She has
lots of odd habits we are working on. She is improving
so that is good. A doggy door sure would be nice.

Have you thought about getting one of the electronic-magnetic pet doors?
That's what we have and it's wonderful! The major downside is that it IS
expensive compared to a regular pet door. Also, they are for small dogs only
-- we have a 20# Lhasa Apso and she is about as big as the door can handle. DH
and I travel a lot and we would keep the dog in the basement (kitties got to
stay in the house) where we had installed a regular type pet door so that she
could get out in the yard to go potty. Apparently, she would stand out there
and bark all night because she wanted to be inside in the house, not the
basement.
The neighbors started bad mouthing us around the neighborhood instead of
coming to us and telling us the dog was being a P.I.T.A.!! That's when I told
DH it was time to bite the bullet and spend the money on the fancy-schmancy pet
door. Besides, if the dog had to go potty during the night, she would wake ME
up (never DH) and I had to go downstairs to let her out and then wait until she
finished her business!!
Anyway, this type of pet door has a battery in it. It comes with a special
magnetic thingie you put on the collar so that when the dog gets right up on
the door, the magnet in the collar releases the door latch and the dog can go
through the door. If there is no magnet on the collar (or the battery dies)
the door won't open! Originally, the door was made to have the latch on the
outside so that strays or wild critters couldn't sneak into your home. We put
the latch on the inside so that only the dog can go out -- the kitties are
still restricted to the house! Fortunately, with the dog in and out all the
time, any wild critters are not interested in coming into our home -- LOL!
If you might be interested in this, I can find the info for the link and
send it to you. IIRC, the cost with shipping, extra battery, etc. was
somewhere around $80.00. Like I said, worth every penny to us -- me especially
-- LOLOL! There is an electronic door made but they cost BIG bucks -- like
$250 or so! They are truly electronic and need to be plugged into the power
source -- no batteries. This type has the door roll up and the electromagnetic
type we have has a regular flap. CiaoMeow ^;;^

Thanks Mary. I've seen those. Daisy is a golden retriever and
too big. She has some really weird habits we are trying to
get over. She was about 8 months when we brought her home
and has been here a little over 2 months.
I understand it takes 3-6 months to actually get past the break
in time with a rescue dog. Hope the cats and I can last that long!

AHHH -- yep -- you'd need one of those **expensive** electronic jobbies!
Better to just train her until you win a bunch of money in the lottery :-))!
As for the break-in time and rescue animals, just hang in there, you'll make
it. ALL of my babies are rescue animals and they have turned out wonderfully!
It's 2 to 3 months just for the poor things to get over the trauma of living in
a cage for who knows how long. Then it's another 2 or 3 months before they
trust their new family. But trust you -- and the kitties -- she will, I am
sure. Sneind a few prayers to St. Frantic -- err, sorry, that's St. Francis
(long needlework story there) -- for you, the kitties and Daisy. Just to
dampen my curiosity, just *what* are her strange habits?? CiaoMeow ^;;^
