Hard Drive Failure
 

Just got up and running with a new hard and had to reinstall
everything. As a result, I lost all my favorites. Could someone send
me some quilting links. A few weeks ago, I got one for a site that had
lots of quilt blocks. I used one to make a baby quilt.

I don't know about quilting links, since I usually just Google, but I
sympathize about losing your HD, Linda. What a pain! I've done that,
too, and I know it's difficult.

Just a possibility--could you take your old HD to a computer specialist and
see if anything can be recovered? I've been through this crisis, one of the
best reasons I can think of for backing up regularly! But I still don't do
it often enough, maybe three or four times a year.

i got this new puter with a network card and old one has a network card too.
so what kind of cable do i need to join the two and get the info off old
one?
bet i dont have one in the house but if i knew what i needed would be
helpful.
i love being able to ask for the right thing in those shops.
make me sound like i got a clue what i'm doing, eh, lol.

ok, i have it on good authority from both jess and paulette that i need a
lan cable.
so is there a specific size cable with specific ends required to do the
transfer of data between my two computers?
i did try the end of my modem cable and it seems to fit nicely in the
network card thingy but will it transfer data?
all info is greatly appreciated.
i see i set my return addy incorrectly on here too, argh. must fix that
right way.

What you need is either of these two things:

1] a cat-5 "cross-over" ethernet cable with RJ-45 ends. If you tell that to
a computer guru or electronics shop they should give you
what you need. Be sure you say "cross-over". You probably don't need a very
long one if the two computers can be placed side by
side. Plug one end into each computer -- the computers should *not* be also
connected to the Internet or a DSL modem or whatever
at the same time.

2] If you have a network hub with at least two ports in it, you can use two
regular cat-5 ethernet cable with RJ-45 ends. Just plug one
end of each cable into a computer and the other end into the hub. The hub
does *not* need to be connected to the Internet or your
DSL modem or whatever -- just the connection between the two computers is
enough.

Windows should recognize that the two computers are now a "network" and let
you swap files.Contact me off list if you need help. I used to get paid for
this -- now I do it for fun and for my friends for free ;-)
