Help for our categories, please!

Hello all,

Excuse me barging in, I am hoping you experts can help.

I am the Network Manager for Kaqoo. We are introducing an "Arts &
Crafts" "Ceramics & Pottery" category and I wish to know which sub-
categories I should place into the category.

I am sure many of you buy or sell online and have an idea of what is
and isn't needed. Are there categories you would love to see but have
never seen? Some that should not be included? Should ceramics and
pottery even be in the same group?

You can see the category here if it helps visualise it better:
http://us.kaqoo.com/index.php?act=list&category=7164

Very folorn looking at the moment :-(

All help appreciated.

Julia

Go to ebay and look around. Pottery would have kilns, tools, equipment
(wheels, slab rollers, extruders, etc.), raw materials. Ceramics would be
function ware (bowls, mugs, plates, etc), vases, sculptures. IMO. D

Thank you so much for your help so far. I looked at ebay but although
I found a lot of c/p on sale I couldn't find this type of category
aimed at the makers. Although Kaqoo sells everything, we prefer to aim
to specialist categories where communities form. Anyway, this is what
I have at the moment with sub-categories, but I have come to an
impasse!

Equipment | Extruders | Slab Rollers | Wheels
Kilns |
Raw Materials |
Tools

These are common to both I presume, but I am wondering whether I need
separate sections for 'ceramic' and 'pottery'. A;; help appreciated.

potˇterˇy
1. ceramic ware, esp. earthenware and stoneware.
2. the art or business of a potter; ceramics.
3. a place where earthen pots or vessels are made.

ceˇramˇics
1. (used with a singular verb) the art or technology of making objects
of clay and similar materials treated by firing.
2. (used with a plural verb) articles of earthenware, porcelain, etc.

It really is up to you on how you want to use the two words IMO. I use the
second definition for ceramics. So "I" would use that for the actual ware
if you had any. I also use the second definition of pottery so I would use
it for the tools, equipment etc. However according to these definitions it
should be the exact opposite in which case to keep it safe and clean use
them both as a header for fools like me and then the mainstream.

I assume from what I see that 'everything' is shown at the top of the tree
and then it is broken down for you as you go to the subcategories. In that
case I would put kiln under equipment. Again though, we are talking my
sense of organization. What you have may work better for someone else.
Glazes and underglazes would fit under "materials" so you might want to
change "raw material" to just Materials and then under there the
subcatetories. Just guessing but it unlikely that you will have raw
materials on your page but it is just a guess.
