does anyone know of a less expensive way to solder on larger pieces of
silver,other than the usual oxy/acetalyne set up? jenius.

You can use a regular house hold propane torch, silver solder and most
importantly, flux for silver solder to enable the solder to flow into the
joint. The torch must have a "pencil tip", which will concentrate the
flame. Make sure that the parts to be joined are clean.
