beads and gem jewellery

I'm obviously no expert, so I'll ask what's probably a stupid question. I've
seen prices of gemstone beads. Why are they so inexpensive compared to
gemstones used for jewellery? I heard that gemstones used for beads are
always those whose optical characteristics are not good enough for use in
jewellery. That's why they're mostly cabochone or sphere shape. Is that
true? Does that mean that beads can never be as clear, and as rich in color
like those gems set in silver or gold for jewellery?

Although it is true in most cases that inferior quality materials are used,
it is not always the case. Tourmaline is a good example, slight inclusions
are normal and often found in cut gems but the same material is equally used
for making beads or cabachons, and will cost just as much. Pearls(round) are
the most will known bead products and would be less valuable if facetted.
You may also find a few other gems used as facetted beads that are of the
same quality and value as most commercial cut gems. In my opinion all gem
merchandise is good in the right place.
