Trouble hemming kids' pants

Well I finally broke down and bought a sewing machine. My kid,
although fitting into 18 month pants for his waist, can't fit the
pants for the length. So I bought the machine in order to hem his
pants. Well the trouble is that the opening at the hem is narrower
than the swing arm so I can't slide it over the arm and sew in a
circle.

Does anyone know a trick to doing this?

yes, don't put the pants on the free arm, keep them above it, RS out and
work from the inside. Watch your fingers tho.

Thanks for your advice. But I'm not sure what "RS" means. (I guess I
forgot to mention that I'm a novice and buttons were all I could do
prior to this purchase). I was thinking that if I put the hem
directly under the foot, (and not slide it over the free arm--which I
can't) I could probably sew half inch (before stopping, shifting,
repositioning, etc.) at a time. Is that what you're talking about?

This would be so much easier to show than to tell :)

RS is right side. Whereas you would normally sew with the garment
approaching the needle "from below" and leaving the needle headed down
toward the desk, this way you will be sewing along the bottom of a loop.
The pants will stay above the bed of the machine the whole time. Put the
needle down in the fabric before you reposition the pants.

I hope this makes sense to you.

Sew the hem on the underneath layer, pushing the top layer out of the
way. (I hope that's clear)

Can't you hem them by hand?? A few stitches and you're done!

I hate to bust your bubble, but, even with my freearms machines, I
cannot hem small children's pants/jeans--the legs are just too marrow to
fit over the freearm.
I wind up sewing them just as the other posters have described: turn
the hem up inside the leg tube, and slide the open end of the tube under
the needle.
This does mean thet you have to turn the leg several times to stitch
all ther way around the hem.
