Can you identify these knots.

Can anyone identify these knots please?
I think I recognise the reef and the fisherman's knot,
but the rest escape me.

Thanks.

Rodney,

Thank you for posting the picture of those stamps! It is not often we
see knots as a design element on stamps. Great stuff!

4 DH. is a "Sheepshank with an Overhand Knot", also called a "Sword
Knot".

2 DH. is an "Artillery Loop" also called a "Man-Harness Knot".

5 DH. is a "Sheepshank Knot"

6 DH. is, as you said, the "Fisherman's Knot".

2 DH. is, as you said, the "Reef Knot".

I double-checked these names in "Ashley's Book of Knots". Names of
knots vary and these stamps obviously celebrate Scouting. If one needs
to be precise, I am not sure if the name "Artillery Loop" or the name
"Man-Harness Knot" is preferred by Scouting. I also wonder if the name
"Sword Knot" is used in Scouting or whether they use another name.

Thanks again for the picture.

All the best - Brian.

G'day Brian and Ahab,
thanks for the replies.
I am a philatelist, although I do not specialise
in thematics such as knots, I was just curious.

There are 30 stamps in that set from Sharjah,
albeit all stamps do not offer a different knot.

Perhaps you should begin a "knots" thematic on stamps :)

can we snare another collector? :)

Best regards
Rodney

hi Rodney, Brian,

it seems that the name "man-harness knot" is preferred?
http://www.scoutingresources.org.uk/...tml#manharness

about the "sword knot":
this knot is also known as "Sheep Shank Man o'War"
or a "Man o'war sheepshank" :
http://www.geospectra.net/kite/knots/knots.htm
http://www.boatsafe.com/marlinespike/sheepshank.htm

and I presume that the "sword knot" is not a knot that is common in Schouting

knot linked here,

Ben

Hi Ben and everyone,

Yes, I think that the "Man O' War Sheepshank" is the most common name.
Thank you. Although, I do like the name "Sword Knot". It is a good name
for the "patter" if one had an opportunity to show off. :-)

Brian.

Hi Rodney,

The only other postage stamps with knots that I have seen were shown in
"Knotting Matters", June 2003. They were from Sweden and one showed the
Reef Knot, one showed the Sheet Bend and the last showed the Bowline. I
have had no success finding stamps or pictures of postage stamps with
knots. If you (or others) know of other examples, please, pretty
please, let us know! TIA.

"Knotting Matters" is the quarterly for the International Guild of
Knots Tyers to which I and several people who post here belong.

G'day eh? (Canuk trying to speak Aussie :-) )

Cheers - Brian.

Rodney,

Thank you. The "Reef Knot" design from Norway is interesting. I think
the design has a medieval flavor. On the other hand, since there is no
indication of which ends of the ropes are working ends, perhaps
"Interlocked Bights" is a better description than "Reef Knot". Maybe
the design represents the knot of a particular type of netting.

I would love to see the knots and designs of scouting from Sharjah!
Thank you.

Cheers - Brian.

There's also one from Hong Kong (shopping in the Jade market) that I
got from Canada Post (Pan Chang knot with a Jade Pi). I was going to
find the link for your viewing pleasure, but their site got all snooty
with my browser and I don't want to move over to the PC at the

I've got a goodly supply of the 1st one and am working on getting some
of the second set if people want them and need help locating such.

Thank you, Carol, for posting the URL of Chinese knotting stamp, but I found
it at a different URL, http://www.cpi.com.cn/cpi-e/newissue/2003-z1.asp.
