Eye Surgery question.

Have any of you had or do you know someone who has had cataract surgery?
Someone who does close work, preferably a faceter, who has had a multi-
focal interocular lens implant. I'm looking for feedback to choose which
lens before surgery scheduled for May 20th. Any feed-back you can give
will be most helpful.

I went into cataract surgery blind (pun intended) I did not even know it
was possible to have different lenses put in. I was given implants that
corrected my eyes to normal vision but I lost my able to see close. I
should say that I was very near sighted and did not have to even wear
visors to facet. I have adapted by using different strengths of reading
glasses and visors. Given the choice of normal vision and using reading
glasses I would go with the normal vision. The reading glass thing gets
old fast but the ability to see normally out ways the inconvenience. I
know that a member of Orchid ,Brian Adams from New Zealand, was
considering have close up lens implanted as part of his cataract
surgery. I don't know if this is what he did but is very open about
sharing information. I would try and email him.

My choice is between the hinged Crystalens and the concentric ringed
Restore and reZoom lenses. The opthamologist's concern is reports of
muddy vision from the concentric ringed lenses. He, and I are attempting
to find a jeweler or facetor(or anyone who does very close up work) who
has had the concentrics implanted to see what their experience has been
as to muddiness of vision, ability to focus, clarity, etc.

Eye Surgery question.

Séimí mac Liam,

Did you have the surgery? If so, has the surgery impacted you ability to facet
or focus work up
close?

I am curious, since I have very very bad eyes and have considered Lasik or one
of the other
procedures (which I know is not the same as cataract surgery but gives the same
results) and I
wanted to know if I will loose my ability to focus up close?
When I am making jewelry, I usually take off my contacts or glasses so I can see
all the fine
details that are missed when I am wearing a corrective lens. I just wondered if
you noticed
anything different? I realize that everyone is different - I just wanted your
input on your
specific experience.

Eye Surgery question.

Sterling,

Just a quick comment regarding Lasik. I had around 20/200 vision
previously, but with good near vision. After lasik, I have 20/20 in my
dominant eye, and 20/15 in my non-dominant eye. This causes some eye strain
when viewing things at a distance. Unfortunately, its such a small
difference the Dr. won't fix it with the laser, but can take care of it with
the glasses I wanted to get rid of.

The other problem was that the next day, when I went in for my follow up
appointment, the first thing the nurse I saw did was hand me a pair of
reading glasses. She told me that the regular corrective lenses helped my
eyes accommodate to the near field, but now that I didn't have the lenses, I
needed the readers.

Before the surgery, I was offered the option of having one eye near and one
eye far visison, but I chose stereo vision because of the fine electronics
work I did for a living. I've heard from some people who love the 'split'
vision, but after spending a day with one broken lens, I knew it would drive
me nuts.

Your mileage will vary. Offer void where prohibited. All rebates will be
retained by the dealer. And all the other legal mumbo-jumbo. Good luck
with what ever you decide.

Sterling,

What I had was not Lasik. I had interocular lens replacement for
cataracts. Both eyes have been done, now and I see better than I have
ever seen in my life. I was severely myopic before the surgery. To
ensure good near vision, I opted for the fixed focus lenses. I also had
astigmatism in both eyes and got a Toric lense which corrected that as
well. I will still need glasses for distance vision. I pick those up
today. Before surgery I had my best vision out to 6" then everything got
real blurry. Now I see very clearly between 6" and 24-30". I can watch
television on the big screen and if it is High Definition I can see it
OK, but not quite clear. Color perception and contrast are better than I
have had for as long as I can remember. In the center of my vision I
have no haloes, double vision or asterism from lighted objects at night.
The surgery is, to all intents and purposes, painless and takes about
15-30 minutes per eye, with a further hour or so before surgery getting
drops put in your eyes. My recommendation is that if your opthamologist
says you need the surgery, proceed without delay or apprehension. I thank
everyone for their input, especially Dr, Mac.
