White fabric review?

I remember the review of different black fabrics not so long ago. I have
a red and white repro quilt coming up in the future and I would like to
get a good quality white fabric for it. I would be willing to buy a whole
bolt. I know that I would end up using it. Not looking for an optical
white; just regular white better than the muslin that is falling apart on
the original quilt.

Other news, I have started a new job and I will be out of town for two
months during training. I won't be posting as much, but hopefully will be
able to read the NG a little on my DH's laptop. I will have email
working. I will be in the No. Virginia area (Dulles/ Sterling). The
company is putting me in an efficiency type hotel. I am packing my WIPs
and my sewing machine to use during "down time."

TIA and happy stitching,

Well...I personally prefer plain white fabric over the white on white
prints. I don't like quilting thorough the latex-y printing. So, for
plain white fabric I like either the P&B plain white fabric or the Kona
Cotton plain white. I can get both at my local quilt shop. The Kona
brand is a bit heavier and you can see the weave more. The P&B is
lighter and smoother. Depends on what I'm matching them up with as to
what I use - homespuns with the Kona, Hoffmans and the like kinds of
smoother cottons with the P&B. Both seem to wear well and quilt nicely.

I know you can order Kona cottons on line at several of the bigger quilt
shops. Maybe there is a quilt shop near where you are working - we've
got some Virginia people on the list, don't we? Good luck with the job.
Hope you really do get some time to work on those projects!

I'm a big fan of Kona Cotton, and was really disappointed when my wholesaler
stopped carrying it. (But you can buy it from Dharma Trading if you can't
find it locally.)

You might want to take a lightbulb or carry an Ott if you have one that's
packable. A friend of mine who was doing out-of-town training went
shrieking, screaming crazy over having to live in the 25 watt lighting that
most hotels/motels use these days. Polly

I like Chanteclaire or one of the other brands that are specifically
reproduction fabric. Their solid colors (including white) are different than
the colors we use today. The white is a bit off-white. Check the Judy
Rothermel repros, Aunt Grace, etc. lines.

Kim,

I know that there is a get together being planned- but most everyone
wants to wait until after the holidays to do it. I'll be up there until
right before Christmas. I would be happy to meet up with anyone, anywhere
up there (with adequate directions). I am not sure what my schedule is
right now, but I will most likely be working weekends. I do know where G
Street Fabrics is located in Potomac Mills.

Are you in the directory? I am, but you can use this email if you "take
all the stitches out" to contact me :)

Thanks for the reminder- I'll put lightbulbs on my "to pack" list. Its
difficult to read by the light in most of those rooms.

Thanks to everyone for answering this question for me. I will check out
these fabrics.

The quilt that is being repro'd by me is one that was made in the 1970's.
I just found out the pattern name- thanks to the Univ. of Nebraska's
online quilt pictures. It is a modified variation of "Carpenter's
Square." I am sure my grandmother used a regular white muslin but it does
look "tea stained" after all the years of hard use. I think it was made
as a "nice quilt" but my Dad has used the heck out of it. All of the
grandchildren have used it at one point and he used it on his bed too.

I'll look at the Kona, P&B, and the repro lines that are suggested too.
If I get one that looks older already- that won't hurt.

Thanks again,
Julie

I have become quite fond of Kona Snow. It is not a blinding white but
also not looking in need of bleach. If you would like to recieve a
test piece, send me your snail privately.
