Pin your fabric at each end where it will go onto your neckline, then again in the middle, and at 1/4 lengths, too. Do this by folding the unruffled ruffle in 4ths to get the point. Measure along the neckline edge to get corresponding 1/4 points. When it is securely pinned, secure one end of your stitches -- you can just knot them together, or what I do is put a pin crossways to the stitching line, and wrap the tails in an S around the pin until they are secure. From the other end, take the BOBBIN thread, and start pulling it, working the fabric back to the beginning (where the pin or knot is) and ease your fabric along until the edge is the same length as your neck opening. Then sew on the 5/8" seam line, which leaves your gathering stitches in the seam, or you can remove them after you've sewn the seam. This would be a lot easier if you could see my hands. Also, get yourself a good basic sewing book - Reader's Digest or Simplicity, or even Vogue would be good. You can find these in 2nd hand bookstores at a reasonable price. -- Joanne http://members.tripod.com/~bernardschopen/ Life is about the journey, not about the destination. |
That doesn't look like it's a gathered ruffled to me. There are no gathers,
it's smooth where it's sewn to the body of the blouse. I've done this by cutting circles or spirals. You can draw a spiral that you cut out so it's like a ribbon however wide you want it plus seam allowances. Say you want that to be about 3" wide, cut the "spiraled ribbon" 4". I'd then do a narrow rolled hem on the outside of the spiral edge and then sew it onto your blouse on the inside of the curved edge. The larger the circle the looser the wavy looking ruffle, you might have to cut several circles or spirals and use the sections that are nearest in the degree of outside curve. That's how you get that nice sort of wavy effect instead of an actual dirndl kind of gather as the sleeves have been gathered to the cuff bands. It's not a gathered ruffle, it's one that's been made by cutting a curved piece of fabric. The easy way to cut it is by cutting a spiral; the usual way is by sewing together sections of semicircles. The amount of "ruffliness" is controlled by the curvature of the sections. You can experiment with this with newspaper... cut arcs and straighten the inside curve out to match the neckline and pin in -- you can approximate the look you'll get fairly well. |
