horsepower for pottery wheel? by Beowulf
How much horsepower motor is needed for a pottery wheel? I want to get one for my home use, just starting out, want to throw bowls, mugs, plates, small vases. Will 1/2 horsepower motor suffice, or do I need 1 horsepower motor? Thank you.

Question on attaching mug handles by Beowulf
I am making my first coffee mug. How dry can I let the mug get before attaching a handle? In other words, what window of time do I have that I must get the handle attached? Can the mug be leather hard? Or must the handle be attached soon, within an hour or so of throwing the mug?

should i buy a kiln? by Beowulf
I have been considering buying a kiln, looking at an Olympic gas kiln; when I add up all the stuff needed, the $650 (discounted) kiln starts adding up to $1300-$1400 when pricing in the costs of gloves, pyrometer, temperature probe, kiln furniture, cones, thermocouple safety shutoff and firing...

newbie question on kilns by Beowulf
I am thinking of buying a kiln-- a couple of questions... when i see gas kiln prices in a catalog, do gas kilns include everything needed such as the burners? And 240v electric kilns (cone 10)... how hard is it to wire up 240v outlet for such a kiln. What do you all recommend, electric or gas kiln?

stupid newbie question on kiln firing by Beowulf
ok i am just a newbie, so this will sound stupid-- what exactly is the purpose of "bisque" firing, what is it, is it really needed or can a piece simply be maybe dried out for a month? I think it is a sort of low-temp prefiring to get all the water of the clay?

kit to build wheel ? by Beowulf
Anybody know of a way to build one's own pottery wheel, or is it just cheaper to buy one already made? I am just learning to use a wheel, thought it might be nice to own one. -- Emperor Wu asked the great master Bodhidharma 'What is the highest meaning of the holy truths?' Bodhidharma said...

can ^10 clay be fired at ^6 or ^8 ? by Beowulf
ok i am a real newbie, but an experienced potter (finishing his MA in ceramics, a working potter) told me that I could fire ^10 clay down to ^6 if needed. What say the rest of you? Or can ^10 only be fired at ^10?

is cone 06 same as cone 6 ??? by Beowulf
As a newbie, I ordered some cone 06 and cone 10 clay. Someone told me that there is actually cone 6 clay that is not the same as cone 06 -- is this true and what is the difference? I hope I did not buy the wrong clay!

newbie needs help on simple question by Beowulf
I am just a newbie in clay and throwing-- just got my own wheel after taking some private lessons. My question: how can I rig up something at home for kneading the clay? I mean, should I glue some canvas to an old table, or use a staple gun to snugly attach canvas to the top of an old table, to...

yohen crystalline glazes? by Bernard Arnest
Hi, I have just begun a pottery class and am having fun at it. For another class I had to observe a couple pieces at a museum, and in wandering around after having taken note of those pieces I happened across a modern bowl with a blue overglaze onto of a "yohen-type glaze." In looking on the...
