About rolling mills..... by
HoyoD
I work in a shop where I am the sole craftsman, doing everything from
soldering chains to designing and creating custom jewelry. Over the years I
have managed to build a modest following and it has been, while not too
financially rewarding, mostly a good experience. The problem is I work for a
boss...

UK Hallmarking Gripe! by
Terry
Does anyone on this NG have any opinions about the UK Assay Office and the
minimum charge they impose?
Personally, I am totally against the minimum charge of 16 pounds sterling
(ex. vat) which the Assay Office charges for gold assaying and marking.
In practice you would have to pay 18.80 pounds...

safe disposal of chemicals by
lisau
Hi. I just bought a house in the woods. The garage is a separate
building, and I intend to set up a small metalworking shop to augment
my woodworking -- I just graduated from school where I fell in love
with metalsmithing while being a furniture major ... I especially love
making small vessels &...

Notice the Hebrew lettering.
I am asking for information regrading this piece as to its age, origin

Tanzanite by
Bertie Doe
Watching a jewelry tv channel, the message from the presenter was " Tanz is
rare, buy now while you have the chance as mines are likely to be exhausted
in 9 to 10 years".
Whilst I would agree that it's both an attractive and expensive gem, if the
gem becomes extinct and is no longer marketed or...

I need to buy a 'Rolling Mill', any suggestions ? by
FC...
Need to get a new Rolling Mill. I don't really want to spend any more
than about $700.00 as my use for it will be VERY basic (texturing
metal, flattening out small ingots). I know nothing about 'rolling
mills' so any suggestions or information would be very welcome.
Thanks,
/FC....

reparing 14k v 18k by
Carl West
Most of my gold repairs are on 10k and 14k gold. Usually no problems.
Last night I had a repair/resize on a thin, wide, cast 18k ring. I figured I'd
be polite and use hard solder. I was using a soft brushy flame at a fair
distance trying to bring everything up to temp in an even, gentle manner....

Who has the right to know? by
Ted Frater
I woke this morning with the above title in my head.
So I asked myself the question?
why is it that this trade is accused of being reluctant to divulge its
knowhow? particularly on this newsgroup
and I include myself in this when other skills like those recently
mentioned here, for example beer,...

Soldering Works! by
Jack Schmidling
I had my Eurika! moment today but on a very small scale.
I got some bezel strip material today and made a little ring to set a
cabachon in and poked a little Handy Flux on it, torched it and it sucked up
the Xeasy solder like a sponge. The first one was pretty ugly but after a
few more they are...

The First Catastrophe by
Raane
I've had my soldering set-up for a whole week now and today is the
first day that a fire engine had to visit. Beware days that are going
too well.
I had my jewelry class this morning and got some great pointers and
new techniques. This afternoon was spent trying some of the soldering
tips that...

Hinges, Silver by
Will
Anyone know where to find silver hinges suitable for small jewelry boxes?
Would prefer to buy "off the shelf" from someone who supplies them on a
regular basis and has made lots of them. (A silversmith told me they are
a PITA to make and take practice -- for whatever it's worth..)
I want to use...

Beaded Jewelry by
sdenison
To All;
I am new to posting anything and have read about buying gems and making
jewelry using metal casting and soldering. However, my question has to do
with seed beading.
I have accomplished the Peyote stitch and the brick stitch, and several
others. My question would be how to incorporate...
