making roof tiles look like slate by
Garry & Michelle Widley
Hi,
My wife is new to the hobby of dolls houses.
She is currently building the roof of her town house and wants to make it
look like slates, but the kit cam with plywood strips that are slotted to
look like indiviual tiles. Teh question is, how do you paint/decorate this
plywood to simulate...

There has got to be an easier way to do shingles by
Cathy Weeks
I dyed the shingles for the cottage today. The good news is that they
are turning out to be a lovely shade of reddish brown, reminicent of
cedar.
However, it was a horrible job! They only soaked in the dye for a
minute or so, but they stuck together, and I didn't think they'd turn
out well if...

Installing a Fireplace? by
Cathy Weeks
Ok, the fireplace is nearly done. It just needs a coat or two of
polyurathane. But how do I install it?
When I set it in the dollhouse against the appropriate wall, it leans
outward slightly, and doesn't sit tightly against the wall. I can with
my hand pull it against the wall, but then there's a...

doll house design by
Glen Sayers
Can anyone help me regarding designing a dolls house. I've made a cardboard
mock-up and are pretty pleased with it but don't know what size is best. It
seems (I know nothing about this) most house are 1:12. Is that pretty
standard?
The only problem I see with it is that for a fairly modern house,...

Sorry, another dumb question re glazing by
Glen Sayers
It seems no one glazes windows. Is that right and if so why? (other than
collecting dust). I would have thought it a good way to keep dust out of the
house when not in use, not to mention aesthetic realism. Glass or clear
perspex.
??????????
Cheers
Glen

Wine Bottles? by
Tink
Are there any tips or tricks on making wine bottles. I rarely see realistic
ones... but I've seen a few that look really nice. Perhaps a mold? Any
advice would be appreciated (or where to get nice ones!)

Need tape wiring help by
[email protected]
My question is, do you think it's feasible to get one of those cold
soldering irons I've seen advertised on television and solder my light
fixtures' wires to the tape. I figured I'd make a hole, tuck in the
bare wire and solder it shut. What to you think?

Best way to fill in a stairwell? by
Cathy Weeks
I officially decided to leave out the stairs in the cottage.
I bought newell posts, stair rail, and spindles to put a railing
around 3 sides of the stairwell opening, only to discover that because
of the slanted roof, the newell posts are too tall! The top of one of
the newell post rests against...

Nail holes in hardwood floors? by
Cathy Weeks
Ok... I started on one of the floors with the coffee stirrers. I read
somewhere that you should put two tiny indents at the end of each
board, so that the stain would darken them, and simulate nail holes.
However, I looked at my real hardwood floor, and it doesn't have them.
And the sheets of...

painting a paneled door neatly? by
Cathy Weeks
The cottage has a pre-assembled door, which in my opinion, is no
favor. It's got four panels on each side, that have already been glued
down (and tightly, so I can't pop them off). I painted around the
panels, but I have no idea how to get the edges of the panels painted
without ruining the...

Miniature Ivy? by
Cathy Weeks
Has anyone ever put a bunch of ivy on the outside of a house? My
searches of most sites turned up wallpaper with ivy patterns or potted
plants, not long vines.
I thought about using dark green wire, but getting tiny leaves to
stick to it seemed like a pain.

spray primer by
Cathy Weeks
A housepainter used a spray primer when we hired him to paint the trim
on our (full-sized) house. It was quick and easy (don't remember the
brand). Has anyone used it on a dollhouse? And what were their
results?

How do you do cane-bottomed chairs in mini? by
Cathy Weeks
One of the projects I'm playing with is recreating my parent's antique
dining-room table. It had rose-backed chairs that went with it, and
the seat bottom was cane-bottomed. How do you do that in miniature?

Small drinking glasses by
Tapper
I'm looking for small drinking glasses or vases. Plastic or glass. I want
them bigger than 1/12th scale; maybe 1/2-3/4 inch tall. I've got tniy tiny
ones in 1/12th scale, and pretty big ones like for a play tea set, but I
haven't been able to find the size I'm after. I've checked wedding and...
