the 130F pitch trick by
Paul WIlson
Folks,
I was working with Contenti chasers pitch and gave it up for some medium
grade stuff from Northwest pitchworks. It's obviously much nicer.
It became obvious when working with it that the NW pitch became quite sticky
when hot, but not as sticky when just warm. So I did an experiment.
I...

Actual "value" by
[email protected]
Lets say I buy a diamond ring for say 10k, and had it insured for
replacement value.
Let's say the ring was lost/stolen almost immediatly after I bought
it. My insurance company is able to get a suitable replacement, yet
they only pay 3k for it.
I don't understand how this price gap occurs. How...

question - term by
C Ryman
What is the name/term? It looks like it is built like a bezel but goes on
the end of a stone or crystal. Sort of like a cap.
Also, is the stone glued into place with an epoxy?
Thanks,

Looking for the name of a jewelry maker by
Bruce
Hi, I'm a brand new poster to this board. I have a question regarding a
piece of jewelry, a bracelet, that my mother-in-law owns. She told my wife
it was made by a man whose name is NOT spelled the way it sounds. She
pronounces the name "Hobay", but she knows that is not the correct...

amber - advice on a very large chunk by
silverstall
we have recently acquired a large chunk of amber weighing up to
4KGS. http://www.silverstall.com/largest_amber.html
I did some research and discovered that a similar sized piece which
for years had been described as 'Europes largest single piece of
amber' had been stolen from a musuem in Lithuinia...

Until we moved in late 1999, I subscribed to the Orchid mailing list.
I have signed up for it twice in the last few months, and never
received the confirming email. A query sent through their contact page
has also gone unanswered.
The only thing I can think of is that my mail provider (ATT...

Reticulation in 820 silver leading to inflation? by
Andy Dingley
We cast some 820 silver (18% Cu) this weekend and tried it out for
reticulation, having never used this alloy before. The strip was about
1" wide and cold-forged / rolled to 2mm. After that much, our patience
expired!
In a roughly square piece it was notable that there was massive
inflation of...

How was this made? by

The object in the photo is called a tsuba. It's a handguard for a
Japanese sword. I want to find out how a tsuba like this is made. Was
it cast, carved, or..?
Here's a link to the photo:

There are eight lessons at the begginer level.

Durability of garnet in rings? by
Shindy
I was wondering how a tsavorite might fare in set into a ring that gets
incessant wear. Searches mostly turn up just the 'hardness' factor which is
easy enough for anyone to find, but I want to know how prone it is to
chippage. I know "hardness" doesn't necessarily correlate to "toughness." I...
