Idiots guide to polishing? by
lavachickie
I'm a glass fuser, and about to pair that up with some PMC play. It's
been a loooong time since my metalsmithing class, and then we used
these industrial machines for polishing and the like. I was thinking
my Dremel would be a perfect inexpensive stand-in for those machines.
I had hoped to find An...

Water damaged watch by
Me
Hello,
I had my niece over last weekend and she is going through the stage of
playing with anything she is not supposed to, I know they all go through it.
So, she put my good watch in the washing machine and now it is not working.
You know the part in the back that makes a watch work, is it...

Salt and vinegar pickling solution? by
J. Dawson
Hi,
I've read in numerous places that it's possible to pickle copper and
silver after soldering with a solution of salt and vinegar, but nowhere
have I found information relating to proportions of the ingredients.
As a beginner at soldering metal, I'm interested in trying this at least
for my...

Hello all!
I am new to this group and new to silversmith. I don't even have any
equipment I am so new! I have been researching, reading books,
watching videos and lurking in forums for information. I have recently
sold a bead business I owned and am now ready to start this new
endeavor. I have...

Paste solder - how to use? by
Robin
Can someone give me the mechanics of using paste solder for jump rings? Do
you open the jump ring, apply the solder to one of the ends and then close
it? I have tried it this way but it just seems to knock the solder out of
the way when I close it. Or do you put a tiny bit on top of the joint...

"It's a Micheal!" Ring by
jcs
I have a ring that was in my father's very unusual jewelry collection.
It has a large center oval diamond about .75 carat (probably faux) and
8 very small diamonds around it. The ring is very large with engraving
on the sides. On the inside it says, "It's a Micheal!", 20k and there
is a serial...

I have several tumblers, abrasives that came with them and abrasives from

The stuff that came with the tumbler is simply coarse, medium, fine and

I also have 80, 120, 220, 500, 12 u, .5u and cerium oxide.
Would someone please lay out...

ancient magnification optics? by
bugbear
I have been repeatedly impressed
by the beautiful, and tiny, detail in some ancient
artefacts, especially seals and coins.
These are commonly examined using at least 10x loupes,
to see and appreciate the detail.
Indeed, museums often display them under
magnification.

Work won't let me wear earrings, not even studs :( by
Phoebe
I got my ears pierced yesterday after work, and then it hit me... I couldn't
remember anyone else wearing anything, not even studs. This was after I had
it done, and paid for it. I went home and checked the company handbook,
(food plant) and sure enough, no jewellery except for medic alert...

Pyramid Bead Cap by
Charlie
I've got these beautiful lampwork beads sitting here, but the only problem
is they're cubes. I thought it would be quite cool to wire them with a cap
above and below except for the obvious problem that they're square, and not
the more usual round.
so I think to myself I'll make them, then they'll...

diamond pricing by
Roger
People,
I was wondering about the price per carat weight of small diamonds
that jewelers use for pave settings on bracelets, rings, etc... most
of the stones are prob around 10-20 points in size. I have gotten
quotes of $500 per carat to $700 per carat for round and princess cut
stones. So a...
