I need to make sashings 1 inch broad. Between the blochs (vertical) 4.5x4.5 inches) I use cut stripes 5x1 inch. It works fine (I handsew them on). I have tried to make sashings5½ inch and sew at the bottom of each block. It is not good. It is clumpsy. So I prefere cutting one long strip amd sew it...
