Disaster by Sue Roessel Dura
I made a horse on special order and it slumped against another pot so they are glazed together - his front leg to the vase's belly. Is there any way I can seperate them at least to save the horse! Best, Sue

Installing three zone controller on your kiln by Davis Salks
Dear fellow potters, I just purchased and installed a three zone controller for my kiln. I would like to warn anyone who is considering doing this. I am generally satisfied with the controller itself, and the company provided me with responsive and competent technical support. But they did not...

How dose one "fill in" the cracks on a crackle glaze? by [email protected]
I searched the site for answers, but not even sure I pose the question right. I accidently was send a very nice white crackle glaze from Laguna Clay, Something I probably would never consider, but I got it just the same, and it's very nice. What I might like to do with it is the technique that I...

donut method by Mandy Farrier Mejia
I have been trying to use the donut method for attaching a bat for making plates, but my bats always slide very easily when I start centering, no matter how hard I push the bat onto the donuts. Does anyone have any tips for getting them to stay in place? Thanks, Mandy

harnessing the mighty internet by Momzilla
Hey Folks, Does anyone here sell work on-line? Do people buy pottery and sculpture on-line?or do you do best at Art and Craft Fairs? Are gallery owners wary of artists with a strong web presence? Would prospective buyers be more likely to see an artist in a gallery and them seek to buy direct...

ID this vase or tell me if it's not been fired? by jjs
It appears that this piece has never been fired. The surface is just a thin, flat black. The top part has a vague bronze appearance. Can you tell us anything about it? http://elearning.winona.edu/jjs/vase/

Can I store a kiln outside? by griz
Hi I have to move from premises I'm currently in and have to store my electric kiln at home. It's a toploading electric kiln with controller etc. I'm terribly short of space, I live in a small flat in London - I could store it in a small conservatory in the garden, but I would rather not, it's...

Our ceramics department (2-year community college) is in the planning stages for a couple of workshops in the upcoming fall and spring semesters and we'd appreciate some input from those of you that have a little more experience in this area. Bear in mind that we're located in the Midwest, U.S....

how to wedge? by [email protected]
This may seem a bit stupid, but I'm looking for a detailed description online, on how to wedge clay, preferably with diagrams. It seems to be the first thing everyone learns, but we never did. We always used prepared clay, but now we're in India and our stock has dried out. Books of that nature...

stupid newbie question on kiln firing by Beowulf
ok i am just a newbie, so this will sound stupid-- what exactly is the purpose of "bisque" firing, what is it, is it really needed or can a piece simply be maybe dried out for a month? I think it is a sort of low-temp prefiring to get all the water of the clay?

cone firing by Stu
I've received 5# of apparently cone 5 white stoneware. There are 3 kilns available around here. One firing at around 04; another set are usually at cone 10 with the third being Raku. The cone 10 kilns are good size to large college class kilns. The bottom line being no access to real cone 5. ...

Raku frustration by J.R.Lawson
Am frustrated, viewing so much great color that others have accomplished and being unable to come close to some of the great blue/red copper results. Have tried many recipies, firing up to cone 05/06 with pyrometer as guage. Fiber kiln. Reduction in garbage can and round BBQ. Using...

Plaster question by Sam
I have some molds I made and I think my plaster/water proportions were too heavy on the water and now the molds don't seem dry. It's been three days and they are still damp. The weather is cool and moist. Can I preheat my oven to about 100-120 then put them in and turn off the heat? Will that...

manual wheels? by Hana Rednib
What is your opinion on using foot-powered wheels? I learned on one and have been using an electric wheel since moving to my new studio. I kind of miss the manual one, there was a real tempo you could get into. What do you think?

Heat Work Problem by pete
Last week we did a 1280º firing mainly for tile tests. The kiln has had 14 firings so it should be at its optimum. I use a fairly good controller which, the suppliers tell me, is very accurate. On this occasion we also used cones 8,9 & 10 to test heatwork. The result was that all three cones were...
