portable wheel by
Michael Marxer
I am a beginning potter. I am considering starting out with an
Artista portable wheel, because I'll be turning at home, at my farm,
and at a friends house. A 100 pounder wouldn't be convenient for that
kind of running about. Any comments on that wheel?
If I get really hooked, I would consider a...

pyrometer, are they acurate? by
Seasa
I have a new Hormaca gas kiln with a built in pyrometer. As far as I
can tell it may or may or may not be giving me accurate readings.
I say this because if I give it a tap, it jumps to hundreds of degrees
hotter, or cooler than I think the kiln is. Perhaps I have a faulty
one, or should just not...

the color of bisque by
Seasa
I am using as cone 10 sand-less B-mix clay and having trouble with my
pyrometer, (it's a new kiln).
Anyway, I have been just shutting the kiln off when the color looks
all nice & glowy red. This is something I used to do before I had a
kiln sitter, or pyrometer.
The wear has a slight pink tone to...

Reversing the direction of a wheel? by
John Rigler
I am a leftie and started throwing in a wheel that has a reverse switch.
Can I reverse a normal wheel by switching the wires that go to the
engine, or possibly by plugging into a power source which has its
positive and negative plugs switched?
Thanks

Does anyone use Alligator Clay? by
CNB
Is anyone familiar with Alligator Clay Company? I'm thinking about trying
the clay there when I run out. They are located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana,
(USA). I get my clay from Mississippi but this place is closer. I steered
away from getting it there due to a comment someone made about the clay....

Why do art books use 2 different terms to describe one type of Chinese celadon?

Glaze prettier inside cups and jars by
CNB
Has anyone noticed that their cups and jars, etc. look better on the inside
than the outside. I find on many of mine that the colors are prettier,
brighter. It seems that the glaze may be thicker. ?? I was also wondering
if it would have to do with a temperature difference from the outside to...

Handbuilding Book(s) by
GaSeku
Well, the goblet topic brought up handbuilding so here I am to ask for any
recommendations on good handbuilding books. As a matter of fact, if you know of
any that are better off not added to the library, please list them, too. Thanks
all!

using different clays by
Kathryn & Stuart Fields
Back in early Jan I asked about using some white stoneware listed at 6 when
my access will be kilns at 10. One of the replies (Eddie Daughton)
suggested using it as slip for decoration. This brings up the question of
combining various clay bodies in a single piece--which I would love to do,
but...

metallic glazes by
MIKandCOL
I have seen metallic glazes that are very impressive. One was very brilliant,
looking like a black chrome mirror. Another was a very shiny metallic orange
color. Then there are the semi glossy gun metal glazes, raku glazes, and
finally metallic lusters.
I am interested in developing a set of...

building a raku kiln by
RBT003
I'm interested in building a raku kiln, but have so far only been able to
find fairly complicated models with expensive thermometers, burners etc. As
I only wanted to try raku out as an experiment, does anyone know how you can
build a home-made one at low cost to be used in a garden?
Thank you for...
