COASTAL CARVERS MEETING by I... M
WOW, what a large group you have. The carvings are so varied and unusual. Very nice indeed. I have been dabbling in carving since the 50's but have never tried using uniquely shaped stumps and logs. Looking at your pix gives me a whole new inspiration... I...

I'm looking for suggestions on a drill that is capable of drilling river rock, most probably granite. Do I need a special drill for this? I know that diamond drill bits will be necessary. What would your recommendations be? Also will a masonary saw be adequet for cutting large stones. Thanks

New biggining! by George G
Hi Gang - Glad to see some newcomers joining in. This discussion group has been going downhill for a long time. Maybe with new blood we can recover. Responses have been slow coming. I must admit I'm one of the biggest offenders. I see one of the responses came from Escondido. I came up from...

Chisels for a beginner by Wally
I've never done any wood carving before, but I'd like to give it a go. I've had a couple of lumps of wood lying in my garage for nearly a year, and I'm now thinking about getting a set of chisels with which to turn said wood into piles of chips. I know I should probably spend a small fortune on...

carving wheel for grinder? by exotic-scales
Hi all, Some time back I recall seeing an accessory that was basically a chainsaw blade made to fit onto a hand grinder. I've been searching all over the web, but can't seem to find it. Any pointers would be much appreciated. Thanks Joe

Looking for some ideas whimsical houses in cottonwood bark by Tom Hayden
Hi On Sunday I bought a small piece of cottonwood bark at the New England Woodcarver's annual Spirit of Wood show. Nice show, by the way! At the show I saw some neat examples of fantasy houses (for gnomes, etc.) that had been carved into cottonwood bark. Now I'm looking for some ideas so I can...

Beginners Knife?? by Jim Warren
I am a pocket-knife whittler and would like to move up to more serious carving. My interest is 3 dimensional figure carving. If you were to buy just one knife to achieve that goal, what would it be? Thanks for the advice Jim

Hi everyone, I'm a seattle-area artist and sculptor and was wondering if this newsgroup is all about wood or if us lowly carvers of stone are allowed to hang out and cause problems too. Thanks, James Kelsey

Substituting a power drill for a buffing motor by Jey
I am dirt poor—well, maybe poorer than dirt—and am looking for the ABSOLUTE CHEAPEST way to carve and then polish a tiny sample of malachite. I want to make a little malachite plug slightly skinnier in the middle than it is at the ends. Since this is the only project I am considering, buying...
