I'm not much of a jewelry wearer but recently got married and so I now
wear a wedding band. I have a number of questions regarding expectations
of quality and what jewelers can and should do but also what the standard
practice is in the field. Please bear with me, I'm a newbie.
The ring in...

Bracelet valuation? by
Gemfyre
Hi.
I have a bracelet that came in a bag of toys from an op-shop. My dad
thought it looked more than just cheap jewellery and had it looked at.
Turns out it's sterling silver.
Anyone have any ideas what it could be worth?

Ceramic shell casting by
Carl West
I'm on a shoestring budget here, but I'd like to give a try to
ceramic shell casting. I was introduced to it in school, but that
was a long time ago, the materials were proprietary and no
suppliers were mentioned.
So, where do I look for materials? I found Ransom-Randolph, anyone else?
Are there...

Maker's Marks by
carlDOTwest
I have a friend who has a laser engraver. I recently gave her
a .GIF of my mark and had her burn it into the end of a 3/16"
punch (in reverse of course).
I have yet to try it on something ferrous but it makes a lovely
mark on copper and silver.
I'm trying to gauge what interest there might be in...

lapidary combo saw / grinder unit - help! by
Adrian Brentnall
Hi all
I'm working on reconditioning a Beacon Star combination
saw/grinder/polisher unit - which has seen better days.
In order to replace the two grinding wheels, it seems to be necessary
to remove the two shaft bearings so that the grinding wheels can be
slid off the shaft.
Has anybody done...

Question on bezel settings by
Jennynj1975
How do you set a stone into a bezel setting?
I have a charm with bezel set stones in it and one fell out. I would like to
stick it back in but it keeps falling out. Is there a trick? Can someone
explain this process? I have a full lab at my disposal.
Thanks so much.

Am I paying the right price for this diamond? by
Eric
Let me quickly couch this...I am a total novice to diamond buying.
That being said:
3.02 carat, radiant cut, d, SI1 (not sure about the quality of the
cut, ideal, premium, good, etc.) being quoted $25K for the diamond.
Good price?

G'Day,
I'm still very much starting out in this hobby (no offense to you craftsmen

hobby)
Anyway - to get to the point.
I'm trying to setup my shop based on the tools i already own, plus what ever
extras I need as each...

Hallmark 297 by
Peter
I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask but maybe someone can help me
anyway.
My friend has a ring with the number 297 engraved on the inside. Is this a
Hallmark stating the percentage of gold? If so what does it mean? If not
then what does it signify?
Thank you
Peter

second hand certified gemstones by

Is it my imaginations or second hand jewellery with certified gemstones
(especially diamonds) keeps a great deal of it's value (if not damaged),
even when resold. I saw some second hand diamond rings with price tags very
close to those of new ones. I heard a theory that diamonds practically...

heat and emeralds...??? Also undoing bezels and hammerset? by
Des Bromilow
I was just told that heat and emeralds pose a problem for cracking.
Is there a chart or rule of thumb with respect to which stones/ gems can be
heated safely, and which cannot?
I understand that pearls are heat sensitive... would it be fair to say all
"biologically created" gems cannot be heated...
