Ring Repair by
Jack Schmidling
I made a ring for my wife that needs to be fixed. The stone fell out and
into a trash bin but fortunately, she found it. It's a very pretty 8 sided
round brilliant I made from emerald green YAG.
The stone is set in a tapered hole and held with 4 prongs. The prongs are

What is gilding wire? by
C Ryman
Hi,
I was skimming through a jewelry making book today at Borders and it
mentioned using gilding wire (spelling?) with twisted silver wire. I
haven't heard of this before and don't think I've seen it listed in any
catalog. Maybe it has another name?
Thanks,
Connie Ryman

Red/pink gold and reactions to copper by
Svein Olav Nyberg
When I wear brass or bronze jewelry, it takes no more than an hour
before my skin gets gets this green layer, and a Thor's hammer I once
wore for a few hours left my whole chest green. Funny enough, friends
of mine who wore the same had untainted skin.
So: I bring out the worst in copper...

scoring lines in sterling by
Herbert Wohl, MD
I'm making a series of cylindrical/octagonal salt shakers, and have
to score the lines to fold into the proper angle to achieve the
octagonal shape. Its straightforward scoring a narrow band of silver
and then deepening the score by filing, but its proving a bear to do
the same on lines several...

Research for story by
John W. Wells
I'm writing a short story, and would be very grateful if somebody could
refer me to a website that has the names for the different parts of
jewelry on it. For example, what do you call the part on the top of a
ring if there's a stone mounted in it? If there's an engraving on it?
That sort of...

coming out of the pickle...tarnished? by
AndreaS
Hi everyone, I was hoping someone would know what this means. Maybe I just
need to change my pickle; it _is_ getting a little old. I've just never
experienced this particular problem. Usually it just starts looking really
blue and doesn't work as well.
I'm working on a s/s pendant. Mainly it's...

'Filler' to be used in piece to be cast? by
sparkles
I have been working on a sterling silver piece that I need to have a
mold made of for casting and I am concerned that one tiny section of
the metal where there is a fold is extremely thin - I'm pretty sure
this will pose a problem when cast. It's in a really awkward spot and
attempting to solder...

I've heard about soldering pastes by
[email protected]
Hi Linda,
Soldering pastes exist in gold and silver in different karats.
In soldering paste, like soldering sheets, there are a few levels of
difficulties, soft medium and hard.
The pastes come in a plastic syringe that a metal needle is attached
or a plastic one with the diameter wanted.
You...

Darkening Sterling, not Fine Silver by
Joe Sixpack
So I'm making a piece with FS pins in a Sterling body. What I'd like to
do is darken the Sterling to make the pins stand out as shiney vs. dark.
Would the chemicals for darkening silver(the scary stuff with HCL and
Teleurium) do that, or will it all turn black?

colored acrylic glue by
Gary DeWitt
Way back in the 60's I can remember making a ring out of layered clear
acrylic plastic and colored glue. The glue was slow enough setting to
allow proper lamination, and you could still see through it
(translucent, not opaque).
Much more recently (this year) I have seen plastic sculpture made...

Hey everybody. Leaning on collective encyclopedia. I've emailed Foredom, but
they're currently the black hole of information.

It's mounted on a base, with a built-in speed control. There is also a

"created diamond" by
Lawrence
Out of all the diamond simulants out there....is there a "best kind/type"?
As has been pointed out, "created diamond" would suggest a true synthetic, which
is actually diamond, just man made. These, of course are best in terms of
duplicating the properties and appearance of natural diamonds. ...
