Mystery piece by Jack Schmidling
Abrasha.. Contact Bonhams & Buttrerfield and ask them your question. They will most likely have an answer. Thanks for the headsup. I emailed the question to them John Harms.Other than the fun of solving a mystery, my need to know is pretty minimal in light of the fact that no one else seems to...

Problems with Rhodium by Linda Miller
Hi all, When I just started my work with white gold, I sent my work to Rhodium plate at professionals. Lately, I have decided to purchase all the equipment needed to do it by my self. I have got all the information about plating with bath rhodium, and I did all the instructions, but the results...

Piercing Blades by Don T
Bought a set of elcheapo piercing saw blades a while back from a dealer at one of the trade shows. Dozen each of the 12 sizes between 6 and 6/0. Needed to cut some 3 mm bronze welding rod to make a handful of dop sticks. So. Selected a 2/0 as a good size to make decent speed of cut while keeping...

vacuum casting and billie goat horns by Mike72903
A question about vacuum casting. Is it possible to have too much vacuum capacity applied to the bottom of a small flask? Being a hobbiest and a dabbler, I don't really have the 'normal' commercial equipment specific to the casting process. I'm using a Welch belt driven vacuum pump left over from...

Wax Carving by Charlie
I've got an idea in my head for a set of pendants. They're carved from wax with raised details such as dots and squiggles - think lampwork beads. Firstly, is there any difference between green, blue and pink wax? Except, obviously the colour. Secondly, can I make a base sphere and then melt...

Identification of moissanite by George Hamilton
It is my understanding that the easiest way to identify a moissanite stone is by its double refraction. Place the stone on a ruled ink line on paper and look for the double image. Is this correct? (along with other characteristics of course). George Hamilton www.explorationgeologist.com

New Pics by Jack Schmidling
I just posted some new pics to my gem page. One is of 14 rings I have made from gems I cut and a few of these were hand forged rings from sand castings. The other is a close up of the stronium titanate ring. Scroll down to the bottom of the page for the most recent additions. Usual apologies...

soldering jumprings by laura
Hi, I need to know if it is possible for a beginner to solder jumprings that are already attached to the jewelry? Do I need to have really expensive tools? I am making chain earrings and Y necklaces that I need the jumpring to be securely closed. Any help would be appreciated. Laura

Soldering Copper? by Charlie
I'd like to make a copper bracelet. But I've two questions. 1. Where I can I buy copper sheet in the UK? 2. What do I use to solder it? I've got silver solder, but obviously that's silver! Can you get copper coloured solder? Charlie.

Flux by Kendall Davies
Does anyone have experience of Auflux, Borax, Bakers Fluid, Easyflo Flux Powder, and/or Fluxite? I've used a borax cone and it's worked quite well but I have a feeling that other fluxes may have advantages of which I am not aware. Any information on these or others available in the UK will be very...

Bleach and Silver by Jack Schmidling
My wife was distressed to find that one of the silver rings I made for her got all grungy from getting bleach on it. I put a piece of silver into a beaker of bleach and within a minute or two, it got real ugly. I suppose everyone else knows this but I sure didn't. Seems to have almost the same...
