Errors in Big Book of Knitting Stitch Patterns by
When I was trying to lean some new stitch patterns from the "Big Book of Knitting Stitch Patterns" the result was a tangled mess. I thought it was just my mistakes as I knitted in the gloom as my wife watched movies, or I thought I was paying more attention to the movies than to my knitting....

The Death of Ski Sweaters and Ganseys - Long by
Yarnstandards.com is the end of ski sweaters and fisherman's ganseys. I am not saying that the Standard Yarn Weight System is the cause of the end of ski sweaters and fisherman's sweaters, any more than a bridge is the cause of the end of a road, but when you get to the end of the road, there is...

Destash by
I am destashing. The inventory is 30 plus pair of single point knitting needles ranging from US Size 1 to 13. Some are aluminum, some are plastic and many are wood, some of which I made. Some needles are in new condition, some are gently used, and others are "used but good." There may also be...

Where was Lambtown? by
It was hot last week. It was so hot that many of the sheep owners withdrew from Lambtown, and most of the live sheep events were cancled. For example, the Sheep to Shawl used wool out of plastic bags : ( More spinners than knitters. More weavers than knitters. More felters than knitters. ...

Why Stashes? by
The Great Yarn Fairy sent me a nice bit of yarn. Why is that ball of yarn precious to me beyond its financial value? I really do not know why I would put so much more effort into planning a knitting project that uses $20 worth of yarn, than I put into planning a evening at the theater that will...

Real, Wooly, Yarn by
I just got a shipment of gansey yarns from Iriss of Penzance. These authentic British breed gansey yarns are as different from any wool yarn that I have ever knit; as silk is different from wool. First, they are stretchy beyond belief, which makes them a delight to knit fast and tight. Second,...

funny thing by
One of the funniest things that I know of is a dyslexic knitter trying to knit an Aran pattern. You know, all those right and left crosses! My Grandfather understood, he was dyslexic. He never told me to go right or left, he would say, "Take your end east," or "Go south 3 miles, then go east 2...

Knitters Poll: Handcrafted? by
Do you do anything to allow people to readily identify your knit items as handmade? I.e., labels, owner initials, etc.? When you see an interesting knit object, what do you look for in determining whether the object is hand knit? Or, the product of a factory? Or, a one of a kind piece by a...

Knitting needle kit question (Boye vs. Denise) by
I am looking to purchase a knitting needle kit and have found these two kits on the internet. I don't want to have to purchase new needles everytime I start a new project and this seems to be the way around that. Especially the circular ones. The Denise kit sounds like it is better, but it...

The ultimate yarn snob compairs the performance of wool and synthetics for downhill skiing (long) by
First, I freely admit that in damp conditions above ~25F, hand knit wool is warmer than HAND KNIT synthetics. But, yesterday, an old ski buddy and I took advantage of the recent snow dumps for a day of glorious California skiing. On a weekday, just after a big storm there were no lift lines, so we...

Question on double wool by
In the instruction for a traditional a Guernesy, the instructions call for using the wool doubled. Is it better to use two balls of wool or wind the two strandes together into a single ball? The yarn came in a big cone, and in my preliminary tests, it does not seem to make a big difference. I'm...

Hard S.E.X.; The Search for Golden Needles by
Readers with long memories know that I really like wooden knitting needles, and often make my own knitting needles. This is the further adventures in the excesses of needle making. I am sharing this because it is easily done in the average home workshop, and I think, well worth the effort. ( For...

Up the old style knitting learning curve. by
This morning I oiled the olive wood knitting stick that I whittled on Monday. Total time to make this knitting stick was about 3/4 hour - the advantage of working green woodis that it works very fast. It is quite crude, but whittled olive wood has a wonderful feel. A hole bored in the end accepts...

Knitting speed ?? by
Had a speed trial this morning. With circular needles, I knit ~ 100 stitches per minute. With DPN and sheath, I knit ~ 160 stitches per minute. I'm sure some of you can do better than that with circulars, but it is better than the 20 spm that I was doing 4 years ago when I asked the group for...
