Thimbals by
[email protected]
When I ordered a thimbal from Atlanta Thread, I was asked
"with open or closed end". Not knowing what on earth one
would want with an open ended thimbal, I was told that they
are the choice of tailors.
I bought one of each and am still clueless.

Ikea Fabric? by
BEI Design
Does anyone in the US live close to an IKEA which sells fabric? My DD
wants a few yards of:
http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10101&storeId=12&langId=-1&productId=10897
but the IKEA in Seattle (closest to us) doesn't have a fabric
department.
I would be happy...

[email protected]
Regarding men's dress shirts .... what is the difference between
oxford, pinpoint oxford, and broadcloth? I think oxford is a heavy
material and broadcloth is much lighter? What is pinpoint oxford in
relation to these? Is it in between?

Can anyone identify this gadget? by
[email protected]
I found this at a flea market. A piece of smooth flat metal, about
eight inches tall and an inch wide with a slot of about a quarter inch
down the entire length. On the upper left corner there is a blade very
similar to the blade of an exacto knife pointing down. At the very
bottom there is a...

Kenmore problem by
Mira
Hello, my sewing machine decided not to work and I'm in the middle of sewing
a skirt. It made noises so I thought it's dirty and needs oil so I cleaned
and put oil. Still making noises and I can tell the problem in the hand
wheel. I cannot turn the hand wheel anymore. When I'm sewing, it stops...

sewing stitch by
[email protected]
Hi everyone. I am new and I have a question that I'm hoping one of you
can answer. There is a stitch my grandmother used to use that would be
on the front of pillows and it was like pinched up pleats going in
"x's" on the front. I want to know the name of the stitch so I can
research it and find...

Hand Worked Button Hole by
[email protected]
I am trying to learn how to do button holes by hand for the coat and
considering where I am in the basic learning curve, I am not too
unhappy with the progress.
I would consider the best so far good enough for my coat but the
problem remaining is that they are much nicer looking on the top...

'Invisible' elastic by
Arri London
Thinking of remodelling something where the elastic will show. Anyone
use this stuff at all? It's sort of pricey, so don't want to waste it
doing something unnecessarily stupid.

Question: sewing chiffon problem by
[email protected]
I've been trying to sew chiffon and am having a problem with the fabric
being pulled to the left. It seems that the thread pulls it that way,
but it could be the feed dog. This is especially a problem in sewing a
baby hem at the corners, since there is nothing to hold onto in back.
Can anyone...

Old dresses and clothes by

Is anybody here into the making of old dresses and other clothes?
Maybe another forum than r.c.t.sewing would be appropriate? My
daughter is impressively interested in clothes all way from the middle
age up to the WWII. She is, unfortenately, not very found of sewing
machines, and would more like...

Carpet Edging Color Match by
Key Bored
Hi All,
I purchased a hand-made oriental wool rug. The color of the wool at the
perimeter of the rug is dark burgundy. The backing of the rug is a light
tan fabric.
The problem is that a portion of the backing is visible even though the edge
of the rug is laying flat. The result is a...

First of all, what is the difference between and inner and interlining?
'Inner' lining is not a sewing construction term. Interlining is a
fabric that is sewn in between the outer construction and the lining
(usually a smooth shiny fabric to assist wearing the garment). ...
