watering dry clay by
Wes
Pardon my ignorance but I bought some fire clay and it is in dry powdered
form. Do I just add water and start stirring? Any idea of weight of water
to weight of clay? My application is to seal a metal box that will be used
for case hardening in order to keep air out.
Thanks in advance,
Wes

Anybody made tagines? I have thrown some, not dry enough to turn yet, but I
am wondering if I should glaze them. What do you all think?

Cone 6 Glazes WITHOUT Gertsley Borate? by
dkat
Just curious how people are doing on coming up with glazes without Gertsley
Borate. Does anyone have a favorite out of the "Mastering Cone 6 Glazes"
book? All of the glazes we use in the studio I have worked in are based on
the various Gertsley formulas. The glazes I like are the Randy's...

Help -- newbie... by
Fred
I'm just getting into clay and am beginning to realize how ignorant I am! I
recently bought several different kinds of clay -- all cone 6. I have
access to a Skutt automatic kiln. I'm making some test tiles to eventually
use for testing glazes. Somewhere I read that bisque firing is around...

Centering and throwing by
DKat
When I was throwing the other day I was trying to quantify and qualify what
the whole process was all about. One of the things that struck me that may
confuse beginner potters is that when you are wheel wedging (when you make
the towering cone) it is easy to think that what you are doing is...

Reduction firing? by
Bubbles
Is it very complicated? I have a "normal" electric kiln now, and not very
much space for anything new, unless it were put outside.
I am very much into using non-poisonous stuff (especially since my workspace
is small and my cats share it with me). Do reduction glazes contain poisons
as a...

Mind if join your group? by
the ''Kroozr''
I have been lurking for awhile now and was hoping to post with ya'll,
if'n ya don't mind. I'm a novice to pottery, have a wheel, a kiln and

okay, I have NO experience... yet. But I'm game for anything. I see

Throwing left, right and seldom center! by
Bubbles
Hi folks!
I am finally back at my wheel after many months not being able to use it for
one reason or another.
I realize that it will take me a while to get "the feeling" back, but in the
mean time, I have a rotten dilemma.
If I throw on my wooden bats (I have 2), the holes are slightly bigger...

Rice grains in walls of porcelain bowls by
KSL
I am interested in the techniques used to put grains of rice into the walls
of porcelain bowls.
Are the bowls thrown or slip cast?
At which stage of the procedure is the rice inserted?
Must the wall be as thin as the rice is thick so that it is exposed on both
sides?

Wood fired kiln approaching reality by

Last weekend I acquired some 200 firebricks - the ones displayed

They were going to be used in a fire-place but never made it, so
I asked the uncle who had them whether he would mind parting with
them.
My original plan was to...

Advice on studio size by

Hi all!
My husband has surprised me by saying he wants to build be a studio,
Maybe just to get me out of his shop area, but who cares? I would
like your opinion on what size would be comfortable and practical. I

Stove top bisque? by
Sam
I hate to be the type of guy who asks a question first then goes and
does a google search, but...
I have been doing a bunch of tiny carvings (less than one inch in any
direction) and driving them 20 miles away to have them fired and refired and
refired. No, I can't afford a kiln yet...

Storing clay by
CNB
I broke out some clay that I've had some time and it's to hard to work with.
I find that it doesn't keep moist in the bags that it is packaged and I'm
tired of fighting it. I buy about 500 lbs of clay at a time because I have
to take a road trip for it and some of it may be kept for 6 months or...
