DIY Kiln Controller by
Jules
Hi - just wondered if anyone has come across any diy plans for an electric kiln controller using an embedded controller?
I'm in the process of trying to make one, but it would be nice to see some others for comparison.
Regards
Jules

Definitions of Food Safe by
Elaine Stutt
I know we're not too active here but i'd be interested in your
definition of food safe and how you determine if a glaze or particular
piece of pottery is food safe. Anyone reading this in the next month
or so feel free to chime in.
Thanks,
Elaine

Glazing by
Mel Owen
In the studio I have joined to do ceramics, I've been told I have to use wax
resist on the bottom and up the side of the work I make in high fire clay,
with high fire glazes, to prevent damage to the kiln tiles. I do not like
the appearance of the unglazed band at the base when I'm using white...

fire bricks by
Alpinekid
Hi,
I just got a bunch of "fire bricks" given to me. I'm guessing
that they might be refractory bricks and good to make a kiln with.
I dont know much about the different types of bricks.
I seem to have three kinds,
1) brand new, bright white, sort of light in weight, and fragile
2) new darker,...

burnishing? by
Wumpus
Can anyone tell me how burnishing is done?
I've done it while trimming using a hard flat stainless steel surface,
pressed against the clay as it rotates. But this is only partly
successful.
I have heard that people use river rocks but I have had no success
in my limited experiments with those....

ceramic bird houses by
David Croft
Last night I was watching The Antique's Road Show on
PBS channel and someone had a pot that had a hole in the
side and when I saw it I had the idea of using pottery as
bird houses.
I don't personally want any but I thought it was a good
enough idea I wanted to share it.
You could find someone who...

Need wiring advice from pole to studio by
GaSeku
My husband is ready to wire my studio and we have a question or two. We can't
seem to find electricians with consistent opinions, so I am turning to you, the
ones with experience in this kind of thing.
We have to go 185 feet from the electric pole. Will #4 wire with a 75 amp
breaker be sufficient...

sweating pots by
Janet Unruh
Hello, I'm new to this newsgroup technology but love all the info! I make
plant pots and waterfountains but have had two incidences of the pot
'sweating' from the base. I use a cone 6 plainsman white clay, and a
combination of commercial and studio made glazes. Any insights on where to
begin...

tips on handles by
GaSeku
Here's the person with a million and one questions again. I am starting to try
my hand at making handles, hm no pun intended. For now, I just want to use a
handle tool. I'll worry about learning how to pull them later. Ok, here's the
question(s)...After throwing a piece, how long before you start...

Cone question by
L.Mac
I just finished my first glaze firing (Olympic 2827H with V6-CF
Controller) to ^6 and it apparently got too hot (even though the
temperature readout indicated it was at the correct temp) b/c my 7
cone melted. How can this affect my pieces?

teapot spouts by
Slgraber
there is no real way to know how much your spouts will "twist" except for
making a bunch and review the results. at a minimum knowing that the spouts DO
twist will help you adjust things in the leather stage.
for me the twist is about 2° or so. small, but noticeable so i do the spout
lip cut at...

exploding part by

Well you all my get a chuckle out of this, I test fired my little kiln
Sunday with a test piece of work. I turned the thing on to full blast
and my part was reduced to little 1/4" pieces of ceramic when I opened
it up :( Live and learn, My instructor at school got a big laugh out of
it when I told...

removig plates from bats by

Hello All,
I really like your group. I've learned much from the Q&As. I am a new
potter so I have a lot to learn. Can anyone tell me the best way to remove
a plate from the bat after you throw it? Do you leave it til its dry? If
so, how do you trim a foot ring? I have plastic bats and...

Flameware claybody by
Deborah M Riel
Has anyone worked with flameware claybody? I just started a class in
this last night, and I'm pretty excited about it. Any hints for best
handling this clay? It seems to be softer, stickier, and at the same
time grittier than the stoneware I'm used to. I found it difficult to
pick up my pots...

Calculating shrinkage by
GaSeku
Is there a fairly simple, but most importantly, very accurate way to figure
shrinkage? I would love to know how to be sure the finished piece would fit,
say a ring for large water urns, spigots, lamp kits, etc.
Thanks for putting up with all my newbie questions.
