vacuuming investment by
Carl West
I read about using a vacuum arrangement to remove the bubbles from
investment, then pouring it into the flask around the model and
vacuuming it again. Seems redundant, why not mix it, pour it in
and just vacuum it once? Or have I mis-read?

Trying to find someone to teach metal engraving by
Joe G.
I have an interest in the art of metal hand engraving. I am willing
to invest the time, effort and start up costs associtaed with it but
prior to doing so I was hoping to find somebody who would be willing
to give me some classes (paid of course) on at least the basics. I
realize that there are...

Planns for a Lapidary Saw by
Jerry Smith
Does anyone have a source for plans for a Ladidary Saw? I own a
machine shop, could probably build one in an afternoon. I have seen
pictures in books and could probably draw one out, but I thought I
would ask if anyone has plans for one.
Thanks,
Jerry

How to Identify Raw Stone by
JW
I have digged up a few very interesting crystal looking stones from my
backyard. They are about the size of oranges. They have a white color/
semi transparent surface with some green / grey stripes deep under the
surface. Not sure if they are precious stones at all but I figure it
would be...

Soldering Stainless by
Jack Schmidling
I was under the impression that stainless could not be soldered with silver.
I had a problem holding a slide on the back of a medallion so I just squoze
it with a 3rd hand tweezers. It really looked stupid with the tweezer
hanging on to it so I had to reheat it to remove the tweezer.
On the same...

Ring Finished by
Jack Schmidling
Today I soldered on the bezel and contoured the top of the ring to fit the
bezen and mounted the stone. The stone is an Amazonite (I think) which we
found in the garden while tilling. We found one last year and two this
Spring. I am itching to go till up the garden.
The photo of the competed...

Solder color - newbie question by
Robin
Hi. I just got some extra easy silver solder in wire form and am trying it
on some sterling silver jump rings. It flows just fine and I'm happy with
the way it works. However when I pickle it, the jump rings turn a nice
shiny silver, but the solder stays a grayish color. What am I doing...

Benrus watch by
C Ryman
Hi all,
I usually just lurk, but I thought I would ask for some options.
I have found a vintage Benrus ladies watch in the parking lot. The crystal
is cracked and it is not keeping good time. The back has 1951 (year?) 14K
gold (it's very white metal so I'm guessing it's white gold). It has...

I just got a trade account that carries David Yurman and John Hardy jewelry.
Do any of the bench jewelers out there have any experience with working on

something I need to be especially careful of or watch out for when...

Hi all:
I have a blue star sapphire set in a 14k white gold ring, its around 20
years old and the gem has some abrasions (excuse my description as i'm not a
gemologist), looks as though it may have been scratched by rough metal or
concrete. Is there a way to repair the stone by polishing, i asked...

need help finding a specific type of hoop for my girlfriend
My gf lost one of her sterling hoops in my apt the other day.
She doesn't wear a lot of jewelry and really values the look of this
pair. It's basically a silver hoop about 1.5 - 2 inches in diameter, but
it is flat. By flat, I mean the...

Worm Holes by

I don't care what Steven Hawking says, worm holes exist and right in my

I think I have learned the hard way what Peter warned me about in private so
I thought it would be useful to share my experience with the beginners that
may be lurking here.
I am making a ring for my wife and...
