If it is winter, then make knitting needles? by
Historical documents I have just come across, claim that dogwood is the
right wood for making knitting needles. Better than- Dare I say it? -
ROSEWOOD.
Any experience with dogwood knitting needles?
Anyway, I am making some. The green wood is very easy to split and work,
but hardens as it drys. ...

One hump or two? by
Every knitting project has a "hump," a point from which you can see the
finish and the going gets easier.
She says to knit 14 inches from start of knitting to beginning of arm
gussets, so I stop and measure my progress every couple of hours. I know it
silly, but I can not help myself. I get into...

Light for knitting? by
I was brought up to have light coming over my shoulder for any kind of close
work such as reading. And without giving it a thought, I have always used my
reading light for knitting. But, over the weekend, I found myself sitting on
the porch (in the shade) with the bright sunlight in the...

Expensive knitting needles by
Faberge made jeweled knitting needles for ostentation. Some had the size
color coded by the large solitaire diamonds or rubies or emeralds set on the
end -- but, most of the real hand knitting in those households was done by
craftsmen (and servants) using steel needles. (Turns out that gold,...

The Gross Errors of a Needle Maker: 000, 00, 0, by
What size is that needle? Hard to tell.
I really do not care. I knit swatches with different sized needles and then
use the needles that produced the fabric that I liked. If you want to do
better, get a micrometer and measure the actual diameter of your needles.
The traditional needle gauges...

It is too hot! by
It is too hot to knit, so it must be frogging weather. 2000 ++ stitches
last night including 50 cable crosses. Oh, well, it is only half an inch of
fabric. LOL
That is what I get for trying to knit when my DW is watching a *good* movie.

Rolling needles by
I'm trying to organize my DPN. The steel need to be wiped with WD-40 and
kept so that they do not get fingerprints on them when I paw through the
stash looking for that special little gopher of a tool. (Gophers are small
animals that dig deep and fast.)
So, I have been prototyping cloth needle...

materials for knittng sheaths by
Earlier, I posted that I did not like ash for knitting sheaths. Now, I
have recarved the goose wing prototype that I made from an ax handle. While
the ash, particularly in cross grain, is NOT smooth enough for a yarn
contact material, the friction generated by the textured surface does a...

Make your own knitting sheath by
This morning, I finished a "goose wing" knitting sheath whittled from a
piece of an old ax handle. it looks crude and primitive, but it feels good
in the hand, it feels good in the belt while knitting, and it works for
knitting. This morning as I was testing it, the last of my doubts...

Wrong critters by
A marine biologist in my wife's office must go to Hawaii for a week so we
are "dog sitting" her Chihuahua mix. But, spring is here, and the dog is
blowing her coat.
I took the dog out to the orchard and brushed her until there was a fine,
continuous mat of hair under the nectarines, under pears,...

technology transfer from the garden by
Steel knitting needles sometimes need to be reground. The best tool that I
have found for that is the little ceramic sharpening stone that Felco sells
to sharpen its pruning shears. It has a groove that runs down one side of
its generaly triangular cross-section. The bottom of the groove is...

Dogwood as a material for knitting neeles by
I have finished the first set of dogwood knitting needles and done some
knitting on them. I consider dogwood to be the very best material that I
know of for knitting needles. It is like magic! It is warm to the touch,
light, wools slide easily, so you can knit as fast as you want, but there...

Rant on Where did all the Ski Sweaters Go? by
Last week, I took advantage of all the snow in the hills for a day of
downhill skiing at one of California's nice ski areas resorts. It was a
beautiful day to ski and be seen.
However, I was the only person on the slopes wearing a traditional wool ski
sweater. Everybody else was wearing mass...

Old style knitting by
The project is to learn to knit on too long, too thin DPN - with the lower
point of the right kneedle secured in a "knitting stick" which holds the
right needls stabile, and most of the stitch formation performed with the
left needle. The yarn is controlled with the right hand.
Why ? Becaue they...

E. Rosevelt by
I saw the PBS special on Eleanor Roosevelt. I noticed that she was quite a
knitter. In many of the old newsclips, she is knitting right along. Who
would have thought that a person that busy, the president's right hand and
legs as it were, would be an active knitter?

Did Hobbits Knit? by
Hard to tell. Tolkien was very short on many very practical matters.
But, he did leave us with a quote that is appropriate.
"I shall not keep you long....
I do not know half of you half as well as I should like;
and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve....
I regret to...
