Advice needed on waterproofing by
Bhangra Muffin
Hi
I recently bought a large terracotta pot, glazed on the outside but
not the inside, to use as a water feature. It looks great but sadly it
is "sweating" water through the glaze. It is not losing a large amount
of water but I'd like it to stop.
What is the best way to achieve this, keeping in...

kiln paranoia by
wayneinkeywest
Zander, I think you're all set.
The kiln is not much worse heat-wise than a gas stove. At a kiln
building workshop, I was told by the instructor to "think of an
electric kiln as a big toaster."
Made it easier to deal with mentally.
I call mine "Toasty" in honor of that workshop.
Have fun with...

Kiln Paranoia! by
Zander
Hi All,
I have just finished installing a kiln in a basement pottery studio for my
wife. I've done the best I can in terms of ventilation, safe wiring, etc.
but I'm still feeling like it's crazy to have a kiln actually in your
house.
Keep in mind I am a total newbie at this, so I have no idea...

Floating Blue and pinging by
CNB
I'm wondering if anyone has any idea of how I can cure this pinging. I
glazed a whole load of Floating Blue and it came out beautiful! Only problem
is that I heard pinging after taking the pieces out of the kiln and for a
while after, which I think is not a good sign. (I took them out of kiln

Question about slip by
Lcdumas
The commercial clay menders may be applied to dry greenware and don't crack
while they (menders) are drying. I want to paint slip all over a piece to
smooth it out more, but the piece is dry. I've heard that if you mix vinegar
with the slip, it behaves similarly to a clay mender. Does anyone...

Italian Pottery by
Tilt
Hi there,
Not sure if this is the right place to post this but it's worth a try! I am
looking for information on old Italian pottery. I'm particularly interested
in two types. The first is called something like "Teche Noir" or "Terre
Noire" but I am not too sure on the correct spelling. The second...

grave markers by
sandi
Hello Everyone,
I want to make a grave marker for my dog. I'd like it to lay flat on
the ground rather than stick up like a garden marker. Does anyone
know how thick I can make the slab so that it will dry thoroughly and
make it through the two firings?
Thanks,
Sandi

Kinda off-topic, but no good clay groups to post to by
Phil
I'm posting here in the hopes that someone will have experience with
modelling clays. The only group that exists for this subject is quite
unused, sadly. I just have a question about clay quality.
I bought some "plasticina" modelling clay from a company called Studio
Basics. I paid $3.95 for a 1...

firing earthenware by
sandi
Hi Everyone,
I have only worked with stoneware but have been thinking about trying
some earthenware. My question is if the clay is rated to cone 04 do
you have to bisque it first at a lower temperature then glaze it then
fire it to cone 04 or do you just fire it once and if so, when do you
glaze...

firing granite by
steve graber
i thought i could fill up some areas in my kiln with granite rocks to
help distribute heat around several larger bowls. i didn't have extra
pots for this and was using up all my kiln posts. a "full" kiln
usually does a better job firing with stronger colors.
the rocks melted! i guess granite...

Question from a Non-Maker of ceramics by
Frankie
Hello,everyone -
I have a question that is probably very simple for those who make
ceramics, but is quite a puzzle for the non-initiated who only
collect. It has to do with the presence of a hole in the bottom of
some turn of the century items that are variously identified as either
"hatpins...

Area businessman Mike Hulbert leased the house with a vision: to

paper clay by
sandi
Hello Everyone,
Does anyone know if you can mix up a batch of paper clay to repair a
crack in a bisqued pot using the slip from the same clay your pot is
and toilet paper in a blender? If so, what proportions to use?
Thanks,
Sandi

Writing on a mold? by
Sam
I want to have small writing on my mold so that the resultant peice will
have little lettering on it.
I can do caligraphy, and I can do it small. I can probably even do it
backward.
But I can't do all those things while scratching it out of plaster.
I need something that I can maybe put on with...
