bits and pieces: new member, thimbles, handquilting by
BJ
Hi and welcome new member Susan. I am soooo envious!! A Jinny Beyer
class!! I'm pretty new here myself, but I'm enjoying getting to know lots
of neat people (planning to meet some of you in Houston soon). I started
quilting 2 years ago and made 2 using a sewing machine before I remembered...

New member, new quilter by
smeehan
I'm a new member, living in Washington, DC. I'm making my first quilt,
and I do not machine quilt. (I've had 3 sewing machines in the past,
and have hated every one of them and ended up giving them away!) I've
just finished piecing the top, and am trying to correct little problems
before I face...

OT Punchneedle by
mb from pa
While at a quilt show, my daughter saw a gentleman working on a rug.
She thought it looked like fun. I think it was punchneedle. Looking
through a quilting catalog, I saw kits for punchneedle and also rug
hooking. Thinking of getting her a kit. Can anyone explain to me what
the difference is...

quilting question... by
Jessamy
while wresting with the monster show quilt I was wondering.. can you quilt a
quilt using the reverse button on your sewing machine and if so does it look
as good as going forwards?
if so then I can save myself a *lot* of wrestling as I do the small accent
triangles I *need* to do to make the quilt...

Need recommendation -- super wide quilt backs... by
Kate G.
what online stores can you recommend that have a nice variety to choose from for quilt backings. I
would really rather not piece the backing for this DWR (there is an END in SIGHT!!). But as it is a
gift -- I really want to select an appropriate backing fabric.
Thanks

How to make quilt with scraps and no pattern? by
Patti
Well, Judy, if these pieces are actually cut accurately, I had a thought
for which you would need to do no extra work at all!!:
divide them into two piles - light and dark (arbitrarily decide on
whether mediums are dark or light!). Sew a light to a dark, then take
pairs of these, turn them so...

How to make quilt with scraps and no pattern? by
Georg
Just Judy wrote:
My scraps are 3-1/2 x 6 inches, and range from brightly
patterned to the very subdued colors, all in 100% cotton. Since I
*cannot* and will not! use a pattern, what suggestions can ya'll make?
I'd pair them off- light and dark- sew them along the 6 inch lines. Then
I'd...

Dealing with a nap by
polly esther
It just never crossed my mind that ordinary smooth cotton quilting fabric
would have a nap. I don't know if I can explain to those of you with no
dressmaking experience what I mean by 'nap'. Perhaps nap isn't even the
right word. With corduroy, fur, velvet, satin and sateen, the light will...

workshop by
KJ
Our guild had Vikki Pignatelli teach a workshop today. It was fabulous!
She brought a ton of quilts, and each one was more wonderful than the last.
We saw all but one of the quilts on this page:
http://home.att.net/~vikkipm/Quilts2.htm She teaches the curved piecing
technique in such a way...

We just watched the morning news and saw that there's a HUGE chemical
fire in Apex, NC- 16,000 have been evacuated from the city according to
the report. Praying for all but especially Wendy and family. Hope
they are out of harm's way and safe.

First Paper Piece Block by

Ok I finally went and did it. I am no longer the Paper Piece V*rgin.
Unfortunately. As of today I officially claim the title of Queen of Paper
Piece Klutzdom. Should anyone already claim this title please speak now or
forever hold your peace. As to the reason that I claim this particular
crown -...

Up for grabs: Flannel by
Debi Matlack
I hate to sew with the stuff and will send it on to whomever would like it.
It's about 4 large scraps, maybe a half yard or so, blues and pinks, great
for anyone in need of baby quilt material?

Hand piecing by
Hanne Gottliebsen
So, since I'll be doing some stupid amount of travelling this Autumn, I
have decided to take up hand piecing.
My hand applique is so slow and requires too much effort to be done
without utmost concentration (I'm a beginner!), but I did try hand
piecing a little, and it seems so much...

Sweatshirt Saga - OT by
Sherry Starr
Thanks for everyone's advice on splitting a sweatshirt up the middle, and
stitching it. I put stabilizer under it, and did a very close zig zag
stitch. Polly, you talked about the sweatshirts stretching, well, they were
already pretty stretched. These are obviously at least 2-3 years old. ...

Sewing machine question - Janome Jem by
Ginger in CA
I am thinking of buying a Janome Jem Gold 660. My question is: do you
have one, do you like it, would you recommend it to your friend? If you
had one but didn't like it, why?
I am going to downsize my machine count, but have been thinking of
buying one of these to go to retreat/everyday use. My...
