Hi Everyone, I fire an electric kiln to cone 6 in my upstairs spare bedroom. The room is about 12 by 14 feet and the only thing in it is the kiln and some glazes and a couple of shelves to store bisqued pots and a table. But in the closet I have stored some clothes in plastic bags. The closet is...

Inlaying Slip by Stephen Powell
Hi, I was reminded of a couple of tips I wanted to share whilst working on some tankards this week. Firstly on how useful second hand dental tools can be particularly V shaped ones in cutting groves in greenware with relatively smooth edges. They seem to be easily available at cheap market tool...

What is the value of a used kiln? by Jon Danniken
Hello, A friend has asked me to help her sell her kiln, and I am wondering how much a used kiln would be expected to sell for. I realize that it depends on a lot of factors, but I have no clue as to these things and am hoping that you might be willing to give me a reasonable ballpark of about...

Acquiring a Potters Wheel for daughter (practical suggestions) by MStuartev
hello to the group My daughter is taking after her aunts and grandmother ahead of her, showing a sharp interest in thrwoing pots in her high school ceramics class. That kind of pottery day by Brad Sondahl
The day started out in a forthright manner--looking forward to trimming and footing about 40 pots, unloading a glaze kiln... I'd noticed that the kiln was taking longer and longer to fire, so I checked the elements and one was burned out. I usually use this as the time to replace them all, so I...

Large bowls sagging when throwing by JM
I want to be able to throw large salad bowls, but I have a problem with sagging just before I finish the throw. Is it better to half throw then left for a while to dry/firm up before continuing to throw? Whats the technique for this? JM

Pottery studios in the DC area by 5string
I make pottery a couple of times per week at a community studio where I rent space --- more specifically, I have a couple of shelves and a key to access to the studio whenever I would like (so long as there isn't a class there). I have my own tools, but use the studio wheels and glazes (part of...

Looking for a blue glaze by m
Have you picked up a copy of Mastering Cone 6 Glazes by Roy and Hesselberth? There are several blues in there. I use the variegated blue which has amazing effects when layered with their other glazes. I highly recommend the book.

Collaring and slab bashing by plodder
Hi all, I was facinated to read all the stuff about throwing and collaring as I've been trying to throw a number of closed forms recently. I find that when 'Knuckling' up if the finger suporting on the inside is slightly lower than the knuckle (or finger)on the outside, that the clay has little...
