New to group/salt glaze question by
Maplewoods
Hi, I'm new to this group and enjoyed reading some of the past posts. I have been doing stoneware pottery in an electric kiln for about 5 years now. My husband cooks down maple syrup on a woodfired cooker and he has recently rebuilt it and lined it with fire brick so that we can try firing some...

^10 reduction by
Elderberry Blossom
Hello,
The Studio I work at has purchased an Olympic Torchbearer kiln. We'll be
firing to ^10. I haven't had that luxury for 13 years. I've been working
in ^04-^6 electric using mostly commercial glazes.
Can anyone recommend the latest and best book on ^10 reduction glaze
formulas and...

Newbie killed a pot by
M Rimmer
I told you a couple of weeks back about a large urn I coil-built. Well
it's been drying slowly in the shed and I've been looking and it and I
decided I didn't much like it. I was happy with the construction, I
learned a lot in making it and I enjoyed making it too, but it just
didn't have very...

Farnham White Raku recipe by
[email protected]
Does anyone have a good Farnham White recipe that does not take too
long to come to maturity. I have a recipe of H.A. Frit (77),
Whiting(14) and Ball Clay (9). This seems to take about double the
normal length of time in the raku kiln and although it gives an
interesting 'spume' type effect, I...

cremation by
Red Deer
Over the years I've had many cats (9) who have died of old age and I've
buried them on my property but I am running out of space. I was
wondering if I could cremate the next one in my kiln and if so, to what
cone? Also would I need to get a permit from my county?
Thanks,
Sandi

Frit question by
Fred
I'm pretty much a newbie at this whole pottery thing, and am in the process
of getting into glaze mixing. I'm confused about frits.
Do frits only make it safe to *handle* certain glaze ingredients such as
lead oxides, or do frits actually make otherwise dangerous materials *safe
to use* (again,...

Newbie ramblings by
M Rimmer
My 4-year-old son was pootling about in our
garage-cum-studio(-cum-toolshed) and he prodded a slab of reclaimed red
earthenware that was drying out on a plaster slab. He said "Mummy,
what's all this muck?"
I nearly told him "That's not muck, that's clay!" but instead I just
said "It's clay". He's...

Beginner having fun by
M Rimmer
Hello, rec.crafts.potters.
I inherited my mum's home pottery stuff after she passed away last
summer. There's a small top-loading kiln, some clays, glazes, tools,
books, and a bunch of pots she made or bought because she loved them,
and of course her notebooks.
My sister (who did a university...

Help -- newbie... by
Fred
I'm just getting into clay and am beginning to realize how ignorant I am! I
recently bought several different kinds of clay -- all cone 6. I have
access to a Skutt automatic kiln. I'm making some test tiles to eventually
use for testing glazes. Somewhere I read that bisque firing is around...
