Calling on professional potters by Xtra News
Hey guys there is some disagreement at my local potters group about how often kiln elements need replacing. In my own kiln I replaced them after about 150 firings. The kiln began to take longer and then began to struggle to reach temp even though none of the elements were broken. I would...

James Chappell's "The Potter's Complete Book of Clays and Glazes" is a must-have book for potters who make their own clays or glazes -- or who want to. It is large book -- 8.5 X 11.25, 444 pages, 1500 formulas plus Temperature Charts, Clay Analysis Charts and a lot of other information covering...

Save your world by the ''Kroozr''
Is this some sorta joke? snipWho is the initiator of it all? AM: Antoll MA is its initiator. It's the pseudonym which was given to me on 11 April 1975 by an extraterrestrial presence which I am still unable to name. snip Okay, so some extratestical presence is guiding this dude, Lord help...

Wet Sanding... by the ''Kroozr''
Yikes! Seems like a long way to go to get a nice finish. If your problem is brushstokes from the paint, there might be a few simple factors, nothing too technical or complicated. One being that the paint is supposed to flow, keep the temps at around 70°F which will let the paint settle and...

Want to Learn Pottery by Bubba
Hello to all, In the city where I live, I have been trying to find someone to teach pottery. However, I have been unsuccessful. The local university teaches pottery, but requires all sorts of prerequisites to take the course. And, I don't want to work towards an art degree just to take a pottery...

FS 9 cu ft gas kiln UK by Eddie Daughton
Hi Peeps I know this is a little wrong but I thought that if anyone in the UK (SW) needs a gas kiln I have one for sale. It's a 9 cu foot (ish, it's a big 9 probably closer to 10) front loader, downdraught, converted from an electric by Paul Stubbs. I would like to get about £200 for it but that...

Preserving paperclay? by Bubbles
Hi guys Got the recipe for paperclay from my teacher on Friday and mended my low-fired pot with it tonight. But I have lots of leftovers. She told me that paperclay goes "off" pretty quickly, but if I dry it out, would it then be preserved until the next time I wet it - and the next? Marianne

Röhmertopf? by Bubbles
Hi folks Hubby is giving me new challenges. This time, he has asked me to make a röhmertopf. I have started, but now I am having misgivings. The clay I use is a high-fire clay that can be fired to 1350 C. But I know that it has to be low-fired (1000 C), in order to be able to absorb some of the...

Glaze defect after decal application, why? by Pierre Brayford
Had the plates been around long enough after the glaze firing for them to absorb moisture? The decal firing softens the glaze enough for any moisture to form bubbles - in some cases the bubbles burst making a very nasty surface. "pbhj" wrote in...
