Repair/replace brooch closure by Betty Vereen Hill
I have a vintage rhinestone brooch (circa 1940) that I can no longer wear, as the c-shaped closure mechanism which should lock around the pin has become very loose. The last time I wore the brooch, I suddenly realized it was literally hanging onto my clothing, as the closure had moved enough...

Looking for inspiration by [email protected]
I was wondering if anyone could recommend a website where there are pictures of jewelers work on display. I'm intersted more in 'backyard' jewelers or small shops where I can see what individual people are doing, where I can see interesting peices that will give me inspiration for techniques to use...

cerita red casting wax and floating scum by Paul Wilson
I melted some cerita red casting wax slowly to the proper temperature and found a light brown scum full of bubbles floating on the top. I tried to mix it in, but it rose to the top again, so I skimmed it off. The remaining wax is free of bubbles and dark red. I like that because my waxes...

The repair is done. A white gold 'cameo' (bas-relief portrait) has a stud soldered onto the back and that is riveted through a 14k yellow gold cuff bracelet. The customer would like the white gold to be more matte than it is. Suggestions? -- Carl West ...

soldering snake chain by slawdog
I am having a problem with the molten solder "wicking" up the links of snake chain when I try solder clasps and other end fittings to the chain. This happens with both gold and silver chain. I use paste solder in my work. Can you help? Also, a great thank you to Peter Rowe for moderating this...

Testing and Hallmarking services in the USA by Paul Wilson
I've read about the various laws governing hallmarks, responsibility marks, fineness marks, etc. in Europe and Canada. I also assume its not a legal requirement in the USA. That being said, does anyone know of someplace in the USA where one might send gold and silver pieces for fineness testing...

Halo all. I have been looking, on the 'net mostly, for the last 8 years, for jewelry made from rubber or latex. I really do not think it is fimo, because it is pliable. At this point in time, I have one earring of each pair of: 1) a santa claus (dressed in customary santa claus clothing)...

Shor Roller Marking Machine by Paul Wilson
I wish to put some nice professional marks on my gold and silver jewelry (something like what you'll see on an Elsa Peretti or Boucheron ring) -- clean letters nicely spaced, small and readable and cleanly struck. I've worked with an arbor press and the letters don't come out even all the...

Drawplates by Paul Wilson
Is there any advantage in buying an expensive tungsten carbide drawplate? The price differential is large, but I'm inclined to buy one over an "economy" model as I'm thinking the wire will come out smoother. Then again gold is soft relative to other metals...? Just wondering.

Gold refining in a nutshell. by bigmoe
This process involves a two-step acid dissolution using nitric acid and aqua regia followed by reconstitution of gold. 1. Get all your gold together and figure out how much pure gold you have by weight. This may require melting a bar and having it assayed, but if you are pretty good at testing...

refine peach sap by servozoom
I have an orchard and have been harvesting peach sap from the base of old trees. Some chunks are perfect "drops", others are contaminated with other organic material. I've tried to refine this "amber" by boiling in water, but it will not disolve the sap, I've also tried alcohol, with even less...
