How do I Oxidize Silver? by
Jonathan Martin Carr
I have been looking to no avail for a substance called "liver of sulfur"
used to oxidize portions of silver jewelry. If you know where I can
find this, please let me know.

Jade versus Jadeite by
[email protected]
Hi folks,
My mom recently returned from China with a couple of "jadeite"
bracelets she bought as gifts for my daughters. She said that jadeite
is somehow better than "plain jade," and reported spending $300 each
for bangle bracelet. I can google or surf on eBay and find them for
$20-$30. Is...

forget-me-not by
Kendall Davies
A student in furniture design I know needs to make about 20 flower shapes (a
forget-me-not) about 15mm in diameter. She needs these as a makers mark to
be attached to her final year exhibition.
She would like the shapes to be slightly three dimensional, and asked me how
practical it would be to...

Ring stretching tool by
Richie
I've got a 12" long tapered tool made of steel that is marked in ring
sizes from A to Z, that my dad used for stretching rings. Any idea what
it might be called in the jewelry trade in the UK? It looks as if it
might have been made to fit/slot into some holder. It will be either UK
or European...

A golden hallmark by
[email protected]
Just bought a pin that states "1/20 G.F." on the back - from reading
the posts, I understand the pin is 12K gold-plated. Here's my
questions, is there a way to tell the date of the mark? Thanks in
advance

Argentium silver vs reg silver (925) by
Bright Shiny Objects Fascinate Me
I use argentium silver for my wire wrapping and 925 silver for casting.
Was perusing the Rio Grande catalog and came across Argentium casting
grains.
My question - has anyone used Argentium silver for casting? Have you
seen a noticeable difference in casting? Is it better or...

Thanks and a word of caution on vinegar and salt by
Paul WIlson
Thanks to Peter Rowe for getting me out of this pickle!
A word of caution on the use of vinegar and salt. I had a failed casting
(covered with investment) that I thought I might experiment on. I dipped a
q-tip in apple cider vinegar and then in salt and proceeded to rub the
silver piece. I was...

vinegar and salt vs. alum vs. sparex vs. sulfuric acid by
Paul WIlson
As to the cleaning of jewlery during processing (removing investment,
grease, firescale, etc.), I'm told that one can use:
1) sulfuric acid.
2) sparex (#1 or #2)
3) alum solutions (100g/l warm)
4) vinegar and salt (rubbing with a cotton swab)
OK, so it seems the fastest, cheapest and safest way is...

Source for nitric acid? by
Bert
Does anyone know of a source for small quantities of nitric acid

Either a local source or a US-based online/mail-order source would
work.
Also, does anyone know if Bryant Labs is still around? My link for
them is dead, and a search...
