Seamless ring joints by Anat
Hi, I'd appreciate an advice from you experienced guys on making seamless joints in rings. While the soldering on the external ring diameter always becomes seamless after filing, the inner diameter side of the joint often stays visible. TIA, Anat.

Variac Help. Trying to find the right one. by Andres
I'm trying to rebuild a thermal evaporator. We need a power supply to heat the boats (only precious metals and aluminum). I've seen very high prices for power supplies at some vendors, and I read that a VARIAC can be a good, and cheap choice. Now, what is a variac? Can it be used to evaporate...

Reticulation in 820 silver leading to inflation? by Andy Dingley
We cast some 820 silver (18% Cu) this weekend and tried it out for reticulation, having never used this alloy before. The strip was about 1" wide and cold-forged / rolled to 2mm. After that much, our patience expired! In a roughly square piece it was notable that there was massive inflation of...

Fake turquoise - What is it? by Andy Dingley
I bought some turquoise at the weekend. Nice looking piece, but I paid very little and bought it from a retail "shopping mall" fossil shop, so work it out for yourself.... I'm in the UK BTW, so it's not a local stone, nor common, and I certainly don't know anything about it myself. My plan was to...

Mexican 'silver' coins by Andy Parker
I have been asked to repair a bracelet made from Mexican coins dated 1883 to 1891. They are all 5 cent pieces bearing the legend MoM 902.7 (or OoS 902.7) 5 centavos on one side and REPUBLICA MEXICANA with the date and an eagle holding a snake on the other. These appear to be silver, anybody know...

Scrap gold by Andy Parker
I have just been given several ounces (nice!) of gold from a 'vapour deposition' system used in a university geology lab. I have no idea if this is pure or what - any suggestions apart from chucking it in my next refining batch (that could be quite a while). This gold has not been deposited, I get...
