Modern silver goes black, old silver stays white by Chilla
Hi Guys, I thought I float this for your thoughts. My friend has a 10th Century Viking ring... the real deal, not a replica. After 10 centuries it's just starting to take on yellow hue. I see modern silver rings that simply go black within a relatively short time.

how to dispose of 22k testing solution? by stacy c
I have a little 22k testing solution in a dish because I was told that it was a suitable silver etchant. (It actually did not etch my silver, but perhaps I did not leave it in long enough or my image was too thin.) In any case, I need to dispose of it because it can't go back into the little...

Curious about Jade appraisal by [email protected]
Recently visited China (Canton, or Guangzhou) and got pressured into buying two jade bangles. The short story is that I wanted to buy some Jade, and wanted the two bangles to be cut from the same stone; one for me and one for a certain other person. I am somewhat naive and expected US prices of...

Traditional hand drill by Zoot
I am interested in using traditional hand tools for jewelry fabrication. I understand there are several types of hand drills; spiral drill, hand crank drill, and the kind that uses a stick and rope. I have a Dremel and don't want to spend on a flex shaft yet. What is the best bet for a...

Jade Appraisal by chris mckinnell
I was in rural China in 1988, had time to visit a Jade factory. Was advised they only worked in high quality "Burma" Jade. After the visit I was able to obtain a few pieces that I have enjoyed these many years. I am now looking to down size and want to sell in a market where the uniqueness and...

What tools please? by Jeremy Pinwhistle
Hi, Could someone advise me on what type of tools/kit I need to buy for shaping small pieces of stone please? The material is really soft - it can be scratched with a point of a nail, and can be cut with an ordinary hacksaw/ drill. What I would like is to make small (around 1cm to 3cm) figurines...

MOVADO Wris****ch ... Real or Fake? by Scott[_5_]
Hello! I recently purchased a "Movado" wris****ch for a very modest price at an estate sale, and I was wondering if there are any telltale ways to distinguish an authentic Movado watch from a potential knock-off piece from a New York City street vendor. In particular, the men's watch I have...

Newbie question by SteveB[_7_]
I'm helping a partially blind friend. He has some small pieces of polished Brazilian quartz he wants to drill a hole into. I have found several suppliers on line that will sell 1/16" and 1/8" diamond bits for reasonable prices, around $15 per. Slightly less when bought in threes. Is this...
