teapot spouts by
Slgraber
there is no real way to know how much your spouts will "twist" except for
making a bunch and review the results. at a minimum knowing that the spouts DO
twist will help you adjust things in the leather stage.
for me the twist is about 2° or so. small, but noticeable so i do the spout
lip cut at...

Repair refractory material in a Paragon kiln? by
kay lancaster
I was recently given an older Paragon electric kiln, meant for china
painting (so it's not huge... about 18" across and deep) -- during
transport, the
refractory material in the bottom cracked, apparently along
brick-shaped lines.
The top looks like it would be moderately easy to reline, but I'm...

Popping noises by
L.Mac
I am very concerned about the noises I heard. I noticed popping and
crackling when I opened the lid at around 100 F. I closed the lid and
waited a while. I eventually unloaded at 92 F. I can't imagine that
the noises are from cooling too fast except that the outside temp was
cooler than the...

Help: parts for Sno Kiln? by
BR
We have an electric Sno Kiln of unknown vintage that has been donated
to our church. The local crafts store says parts are no longer
available for these kilns. It needs at least one switch (there are 4)
and the band around the lid needs hardware such as a new handle and
what appears to be a...

Brent electric wheels by
psci_kw
I like to throw off the mound,
mostly cups and bowls, and have only rarely thrown anything
as much as a foot high that stayed on center ... that is,
I'm a hobbyist, not an artist or production potter.
Ahhhh....try slowing the wheel down a bit the higher you pull. You will
find it MUCH...

Glaze mess by
Clayslinger
I'm no expert except to say "been there, done that, bought the t-shirt".
Here is my experience:
1. How do I get them off my shelves?
I use a chisel or screwdriver (bugs the hell out of my hubby) and a hammer.
Try not to take too much kiln shelf with it (duh, that's a given). I tap
gently right at...

for the glaze gurus by
Clayslinger
This one is for all the glaze gurus and experts out there;
I acquired some glaze (in a bucket - premixed) from a woman who retired from
pottery. It is a beautiful creamy white BUT is very touchy. It cracks and
flakes off my bisque and if I don't carefully smooth all the hairline cracks
before...

Old Kress Kiln by
GaSeku
I recently bought an old cress kiln. It's probably over twenty years old. The
outside looks its age but the inside looks almost brand new. All of the
elements are working and the cord seems in good shape. Is there anything else
I need to check before firing it up? Thanks all!

Which is better, dry kiln wash or liquid kiln wash? Is there a big

Being always at the front of every battle (and occasionally cannon
fodder), I've started issuing operating instructions for my pots,
beginning with the mug. Wow! I bet you wished you thought of that! My
mug sales are likely to skyrocket! Moo ahh hah hah!
You can see my outstanding instructions,...

Pugmill for sale by
Graham Stoneman
Hi,
My old man has a Ratcliffe R25 pugmill for sale, it has a 2" extrusion, and
has been used by classes of about 20 people. I'm not a potter (actually
neither is he!) but I'm sure somebody out there must want one of these.
I've taken various photos of it (please click on the links below). ...

Wheel with lugs on it by
Anne Mossman
I'm a relative novice at the wheel and to date have used studio and rented
wheels (without lugs).
I've just acquired my own new wheel and ordered it with lugs on it, thinking
it must be more useful/efficient to sit bats on it this way than to have to
make clay chucks to hold bats on.
Having taken...

potters in washington state? by

Clay art in tacoma is a good supply, Seattle Pottery supply has lots of stuff but
not as friendly as Clay art.
The Burien parks dept has ceramics training, I am taking classes at Highline
community college and Boeing has a ceramics club too.
