And speaking of bisque and green glaze firing by DKat
I have some pieces that were meant for a pit fire. They have been burnished so if I fire them with my regular bisque (which I generally fire to cone 06) then they are going to lose their shine. What do you all think of bisque firing everything at the lower cone 010 (or even try pushing it to...

Smart idea for ashtrays by Bubbles
A friend has these things in metal, but I will be making some for me in clay. They are simply a little tube that sits inside the ashtray. The hole is just slightly larger diameter than a cigarette is. Instead of smushing the cigarette to put it out, you just plonk it ember end first into the...

Salt experiment by J M
Having an electric kiln I don't want to kill it by salt glazing - so I've never tried it. However, this may sound silly, but I have heard of rice, sawdust and other items being put into the clay - and was wondering what effect you would get in the glaze by mixing salt into the clay...

Tapping to center by [email protected]
I am new to clay and wheels and right now trying to learn to tap to center, this morning while practicing and somewhat struggling with it, I thought that tapping it with a stick in place of my hand I'd be able to better control the tapping force, like...

Preventing warping? by Bubbles_
Me again I _think_ that the thicker the "slab", the easier it will warp. I have to have a very flat, thin slab that doesn't warp at all (yes, for my clock). I would like everyone's tips on how they prevent flat "tiles/slabs" from warping, please? Marianne

glaze gone bad by Red Deer
Hi Everyone, Can glazes go bad? I have a glaze that was real nice when it was new (two years ago). Now it seems to have gone bad. The pots with this glaze on them come out of the kiln with what looks like bubbles that have formed and burst open but never smoothed over. All the other pieces in...

Talc! by DKat
The writing on the wall is that the University is not going to allow us to use Talc either in our glazes or our clays (how in the world you are supposed to find that out given the mix we have that has come and gone and the recycling done...). Our best glazes use Talc. What in the world can you...

getting started at home by [email protected]
I'd like to get started making pottery at home. I enjoyed my class on pottery when I was in high school, but they never taught us the ins and outs of finding electric wheels, kilns, the different types of clays and glazes, and where to find all the supplies for making it at home. If anybody can be...

Investing in a couple of new books by Bubbles
Hi guys. I have Jacqui Atkins book on hand building. Fantastic amount of variation and ideas there. I am very impressed. But I would love some more ideas. I have plaster moulds - half-globe - up to 30 cm and can get them bigger. I also have my own resources and those of my recoursful hubby to...

Pitting & Pinholing by Lindsay MacArthur
Is there any harm in refiring pieces that have pitting/pinholing? Can refiring help at all or will it make it worse? I can almost guarantee the pitting/pinholing resulting from the glaze being too thick as the only pieces that have it are those that I double dipped to mix colors. I have done...

Kinda off-topic, but no good clay groups to post to by Phil
I'm posting here in the hopes that someone will have experience with modelling clays. The only group that exists for this subject is quite unused, sadly. I just have a question about clay quality. I bought some "plasticina" modelling clay from a company called Studio Basics. I paid $3.95 for a 1...

Can someone test my clay? by knob
My latest project to irritate my wife is playing in the mud. My two small children and I mixed up a batch of clay and had a great time doing it. I'm building a pottery wheel right now and if my clay is good I will also build a kiln. Please note that I do not intend to make great works of art, we...

Morter and pestal? by Bubbles
Hi everyone :-) I am typing from Switzerland and have been "potterying around" for about 3 years now. I am making good progress and have an old (cheap) used wheel here at home on the terrace that I can use when the weather is nice. I also go take classes once a week and will be renting that...

Large bowls sagging when throwing by JM
I want to be able to throw large salad bowls, but I have a problem with sagging just before I finish the throw. Is it better to half throw then left for a while to dry/firm up before continuing to throw? Whats the technique for this? JM

Blistering on Stoneware by Davis Salks
I have been struggling with this problem for about a year now. Can anyone please help with any suggestions or comments? I am getting a variety of blister sizes. Want to Learn Pottery by Bubba
Hello to all, In the city where I live, I have been trying to find someone to teach pottery. However, I have been unsuccessful. The local university teaches pottery, but requires all sorts of prerequisites to take the course. And, I don't want to work towards an art degree just to take a pottery...

Can Nothing Go Right?! by Doug Porter
A couple weeks ago I finished my first glaze firing in my brand new Olympic Kiln----WHAT A DISASTER!!!! I am still trying to chisel pieces of glaze and pottery off of my shelves. Anyways, to add to my misery I noticed, post firing, that the fire bricks on the bottom of my kiln have cracked. How...
