Gage sizes of silver and copper wire by
gloflyer
If a wire is a certain gage is that size constant across different
types of metal?
I used my disc cutter with 22 gage sheet copper and 18 gage copper
wire to make discs and jump rings until I had a design that I liked
for a necklace.
I then attempted to make the same design with Argentium...

pure gold not so pure? by
m4816k
Recently I saw that on the surface of one of my 24k ingots, a small brown
dot developed, and it was while the piece was still in original package
(cardboard/plastic). I thought that some dirt may have entered the space
within, and decided to take it out to see if it can be cleaned. I used a dry...

graver sharpening by
Ted Callier
I am trying to learn hand engraving on my own, with the help of two
books (Hardy/Bowman and Meeks). And watching videos on Youtube. These
are a great help to visualise the process of engraving. Thing is, I
just can't seem to find any instructional videos for sharpening
gravers. All I could find is...

bracelets by
Mr G H Ireland
While "surfing", I came across some bracelets made by a Dutch man named
van Heeckeren. (see Google and the name)
He describes them as hollow, constructded, sterling Silver. He wants a
fantastic price,e.g.$A 6000/pair for them and I wonder,
a) how, actually they were made, and
b) who would buy...

Making a White Gold Ring by
Kendall Davies
I have the opportunity of making a white gold wedding ring for a man getting
married in 6 weeks. He wants a brushed finish to the ring. Since I have not
used white gold before (I work almost exclusively with silver) I feel a bit
apprehensive. Comments and advice would be very much...

TIME TO TAKE MATTERS INTO MY OWN HANDS by
[email protected]
Well guys, I bought a beautiful brass pendant, about 2 inches across
from overseas. Beautiful. Just one problem: it hangs upside down. I
figured it would be easy enough for a jeweler to fix it. I figured
they'd just saw the loop off one end and put it on another.
Well I took it in, and there was...

Jade versus Jadeite by
[email protected]
Hi folks,
My mom recently returned from China with a couple of "jadeite"
bracelets she bought as gifts for my daughters. She said that jadeite
is somehow better than "plain jade," and reported spending $300 each
for bangle bracelet. I can google or surf on eBay and find them for
$20-$30. Is...

Gold soldering question... by
Al A.
Hi All,
I am going to be making a couple of gold rings, simple wedding band
type things. These are going to be made in 14K white gold. I'm hoping
for just a bit of guidance. I am at best a hobbiest at this sort of
thing and have done lots of soldering on silver, both in jewelry making
and for...

BEWARE CAST-SET JEWELRY
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q. WHAT IS IT?
A. Cast in place is a process where stones are "set" in wax or plastic
models before the ring is cast in precious metal. Most common in lower end
gold jewelry with diamond "chips" or invisible settings, the process removes
the...
help with needle files for wire by
sunniebgi
I hope I'm in the right place.
I was given a set of small files called BeadSmith Needle Files. Told they
are used for filing the rough edges of wire (and I'm sure other things but
this is what I want to use them for.) Problem is they came with no
information as to what each of the 12...
Pictures by
What is a good way of taking jewelry pictures with a digital camera? I can't
seem to get them "nice" enough. I am really picky :o)
My apartment has very bad light so I have been taking the pieces outside and
photographing them on a white sheet of paper. It works better than my older
pictures, which...
