Nickel oxide versis nickel carbonate by
Bruce on Earthlink
Question? I want to try some Nickel oxide or nickel carb as a colorant
in my glaze. Does anyone know the pros and cons of using one instead of the
other. I know that nickel carbonate is less expansive.

Anyone ever embed wire mesh in the clay for support? by
[email protected]
I'm thinking of creating a guitar body in clay and wonder if anyone has
ever used wire screening inside of the clay for structural support. I
fire to cone 7 and assume that the wire would likely melt but then
solidfy when cooled. I would think that this might add some resistance
to cracking over...

Want to Learn Pottery by
Bubba
Hello to all,
In the city where I live, I have been trying to find someone to teach
pottery. However, I have been unsuccessful. The local university
teaches pottery, but requires all sorts of prerequisites to take the
course. And, I don't want to work towards an art degree just to take a
pottery...

Wedged clay - ready-made balls for the wheel? by
Bubbles
Hi again!
Full of questions, I am - and you guys are so great about offering your
advice!
So - today I wedged my recycled clay. Probably should have done it
yesterday, but didn't get time/energy.
While wedging, I thought, gosh - why put it into one huge lump? Why not make
balls ready for when I...

Saving my pipes - setting up a home studio by
Bubbles
Hi everyone!
After 2 months of stress and aching muscles, we have finally moved into our
house. In the basement, I have my own room for pottery! YAY!!!
There is a kitchen counter there with a kitchen sink. It would be great if I
could do something so that I can use the sink to wash stuff,...

Japanese (coil?) wedging problems by
Bubbles
Hi everyone!
I have been trying to learn to do the japanese wedging. It looks soooo
simple and relaxing when my teacher does it, but I just can't get the hang
of it. While her wedged pieces have a lovely knob in the middle and the clay
goes neatly back from the coil, I have a hole in the middle...

Nylon fibers in clay? by
Bubbles
Hi
Been reading and read about adding nylon fibers to clay that you will be
making slabs out of, in order to strengthen the slabs.
But..... nylon melts, doesn't it? I don't get this at all!

Pictures of hand placements? by
Bubbles
Hi folks!
Me again! Avid learning taking place! Hehe!
I want to print and laminate pictures of hand positions during various
operations of throwing and then laminate them and hang them in front of my
wheel for very quick reference. I have been picture-googling for pictures,
but ended up at...

Vulcan pot pinch versus using index and long finger? by
Bubbles
Here's me again - full of questions! :-D
Okay - today I actually managed to center well and ended up with 2 bowls
that I lifted off the wheel. I tried getting my fingers around the vulcan
pot pinch, but I couldn't spread them wide enough appart and ended up using
index and long fingers...

Funny feel to my clay by
Bubbles
Hi again all you lovely people!
Was in the workshop again today and had some clay (reclaimed) that had gone
too dry and I had rolled thin and sprayed with water, layered and left in
plastic to soften up.
When I kneaded it today, it seemed almost like plastecine/plastelina -
really plastic-like on...

Reclaiming clay - how-to? by
Bubbles
Hi guys!
What I have been doing up until now is to slop my lefotovers (a LOT when you
are a newbie on the wheel!) into a 10-liter bucket. Then I crunch the bits
down into maximum 2 cm bits or less.
But is 10 liters of clay too much to reclaim at once on a gypsum board? Am I
being too...

Throwing left, right and seldom center! by
Bubbles
Hi folks!
I am finally back at my wheel after many months not being able to use it for
one reason or another.
I realize that it will take me a while to get "the feeling" back, but in the
mean time, I have a rotten dilemma.
If I throw on my wooden bats (I have 2), the holes are slightly bigger...

Wondering about making words to place on pieces by
Bubbles
Hi guys
What with the discussion about stamps, I was wondering if anyone has tried
stamping into a wet piece of clay, then letting the clay dry - then taking
another piece of clay and pressing it into the original piece in order to
make letters that stick out instead of ones that are indented into...
