Firing an almost empty kiln by John Rigler
Of course firing a kiln that is not completely full is a waste of energy, but it somehow also take longer since there is less mass inside it to hold the head which the elements produce?

candleholders by sandi
Hello Everyone, Does anyone know of something I could use to gage the opening on a candleholder, the kind that you open off center and pull a saucer and then pull the actual candlestick then attach a little finger handle? Sort of early American looking. It seems like I can't get the holes uniform...

refiring piece of porcelain slip under glaze. by Marmaj40
I have a cone 6 piece that when it was leather hard, I covered with porcelain slip to make the clay lighter in color. I fired it at 06 for bisque, and then glazed it, and fired to cone 6. It came out very rough, with the porcelain in little bubbles that looked smooth like it fired to temperature,...

difficulty with firing by Evelyn Bednarz
I am new at firing my own stuff. I bought a used Skutt kiln (10 cubic feet fires to cone 8 with electronic controller) I initially fired it empty ( with shelves in) which is what the manufacturer suggests when the kiln is new or has been moved using the "med " cone 04 program (preset) All of...

new to porcelain by Deborah M Riel
I just touched porcelain for the first time tonight. It's so soft, and I love the way it feels! I've been working with flameware all year, and that stuff will rip the skin off your hands and it feels like glass slivers are embedded in your skin after working with it. Any hints for throwing? I'm...

pulled handles by sandi
Hello Everyone, Does anyone know if there is an advantage to pulling the handle from the pot as opposed to pulling a handle separately and then attaching it to the pot? Thanks, Sandi

Where is the "webmaster" when all of this non-pottery garbage is posted? I see this has turned into a porno site, and the potters are gone. It makes me sad.

Puppet Master threads???? by Lori
Um, excuse me - but, I'm having a difficult time understanding how and when this board became a forum for politics, such as the "Puppet Master" threads that have recently appeared instead of clay and pottery related discussions. Could someone kindly explain this to me, please? Thanks, Lori

Terracotta decorating problem. by Hugh Prosser
Some years ago, the "in thing" for unglazed terracotta pots (at least in New Zealand) was to put straw or grass onto the pot and refire it so the organic material left black carbon markings on the terracotta surface. A customer had a two piece bird bath where the top got broken and he wants another...

Stove top bisque? by Sam
I hate to be the type of guy who asks a question first then goes and does a google search, but... I have been doing a bunch of tiny carvings (less than one inch in any direction) and driving them 20 miles away to have them fired and refired and refired. No, I can't afford a kiln yet...
