Soldering Surgical Steel to Gold by
NMarshall
My customer can only wear surgical steel posts. She wants me to solder gold
heads to surgical post/pads. I know nothing about surgical steel
properties and what I would need to consider in the soldering process.
Some questions I know to ask are listed below, any other info. I would need

Large Stampings by
[email protected]
Hello Eevryone,
Lately I am interested in setting (in gold)large stones that have a flat
base.
I am running into some difficulties in finding them and in most cases,
I have to make them myself.
Making it takes lots of time and the item is not very profitable.
I'll be glad to recive any...

Cast in place stones by
Jewelerman
Can I get a poll of what the bench jewelers out there charge for replacing
stones that come out when sizing those pesky stone cast in place rings? I
usually do not charge when I simply have to tighten the stones but when they
completely come out I try to get $3.00 to $5.00 per stone for...

palladium by
m4816k
Could someone write me a few sentences about pros and cons of palladium, and
maybe do a little comparisson of palladium vs. most common jewellery metals
(gold, silver, platinum)?
I'm guessing Peter wouldn't have a problem writing one of his usual short
(10-15 page) essays on the topic(s)...:-)
All...

What is gilding wire? by
C Ryman
Hi,
I was skimming through a jewelry making book today at Borders and it
mentioned using gilding wire (spelling?) with twisted silver wire. I
haven't heard of this before and don't think I've seen it listed in any
catalog. Maybe it has another name?
Thanks,
Connie Ryman

watch bracelets by
m4816k
Is there a substantial price diference between titanium watch bracelets and
those made of stainless steel? How big is the diference aprox., say in
percentages (if possible)? And finally, are titanium bracelets worth the
extra cost - I know they're more durable and secure, but don't know exactly
how...

New Directory looking for submissions by
Adam Sargant
Frustrated with commercial google results when browsing for information, I've
started a new directory at www.reallyusefulstuff.com. The criteria for
inclusion is that the link is to a "how to..." page, an online tutorial and
some similarly informative site. I don't actively exclude sites that...

Mapp Gas by

Anybody ever use that Mapp-Oxygen combo torch? I have always just used
propane with a fine point. Ive heard that Mapp gets very hot. Is it too
hot for fine work, like pure silver bezels, light guage wire etc?

Preprogrammed burnouts in a jewelry kiln by
Allen Steen
I have a digital kiln that uses preprogrammed burnouts. They include 5
hour, 8 hour, and 12 hour burnouts. The hold temperature at the end of
each burnout is 900 degrees F.
I can also program my own burnouts.
What do you think of 900 degrees F as a hold temperature for the
preprogrammed burnouts?...

life span of a casting mold ? by
TRafferty
As a consumer, I've been told that a certain jeweler has been
continually using a 30 year old mold to cast gold jewelry.
I thought those molds wore out after so many pours, being made from
rubber. So you can only shoot hot liquid wax in there so many times,
then you have to make a new mold.
Is...

ancient magnification optics? by
bugbear
I have been repeatedly impressed
by the beautiful, and tiny, detail in some ancient
artefacts, especially seals and coins.
These are commonly examined using at least 10x loupes,
to see and appreciate the detail.
Indeed, museums often display them under
magnification.

We have recently found that an offshore manufacturer is copying our
